Don't You Just Love an Idea That Changes Something We Think Can't Be Improved?

Ever think of what it must be like for a blind person with a cane? Like, what happens if the tip of the cane gets stuck in a crack in the pavement?

Sebastian Ritzler, a student at the Muthesius Academy of Art and Design in Kiel, Germany, is developing a smart cane that, with the help of electronics, become more like a guide dog than a cane.

The cane is supposed to be tough, height-adjustable for men and women, and waterproof. But here’s the best part: It includes a system with a smart sensor and camera combo that can measure the ground area accurately in real time and pushes auditory feedback to a headset. In addition, the mini wheel at the tip of the cane has a hub motor that provides intuitive feedback through the grip, doubling as a steering engine that can last about 6 hours on a lithium-ion battery.

The Secret To Long Life

Researchers have discovered two genes that play a role in prolonging life. These genes kick into high gear when the amount of calories an organism takes in is reduced.

In the study, the genes SIRT3 and SIRT4 were shown to help protect cells from diseases caused by aging. These genes help to maintain cellular mitochondria and prevent them from dying. As a result, the cells retain the energy they need to stay healthy.

Just How Silly Can Bottled Water Get?

Just when you thought only one man could turn water into wine, along comes a Canadian entrepreneur with H2O that's bottled, sold and sipped as if it were the finest Cabernet. And, at $54 for a case of 12, it might as well be. Part of an emerging trend toward water connoisseurship, 10 Thousand BC is "ultra-premium" water derived from an environmentally protected glacier, bottled and corked to the sound of inspirational music -- much like playing Mozart to a baby in the womb -- and served to aficionados who shudder at the thought of table water containing more than four parts per million in total dissolved solids.

"Bottled water is the next wine," enthuses Michael Mascha, author of the new book Fine Waters: A Connoisseur's Guide to the World's Most Distinctive Bottled Waters.

Ian: I think I want to puke.

Legionella found in Hospital Water Cooler

You know those water coolers everyone seems to have in their office? The ones with the big water tank on top? Thought they were safe? Think again.

Legionella bacteria has been detected in a Christchurch Hospital office-type water cooler filter. Testing was done at the hospital last October after a patient showed symptoms of Legionnaires disease and one of 14 office-style water coolers was found to have a "significant level" of legionella bacteria in a filter. The cooler, which had a filter that had some months to go before its expiry date, was removed from the hospital as soon as the test results were confirmed.

Thoughts on Selfish Health

I had a lady call me yesterday. She loves her Alphion water alkaizer and drinks her two litres a day religiously. She had been to a Chiropractor and Kinesiologist for her recurrent bad back. Now 56, she was told in her early thirties that her back was a write off and that she should expect deteriorating symptoms as she aged. The Chiro worked on her neck, and then using kinesiology, came to the interesting conclusion that she was 'electrolyte deficient', selling her some sodium and potassium ascorbate; a less acidic form of Vitamin C supplement - (even though she didn't know what it was until I told her)

She was worried about this diagnosis. Did it mean the water wasn't helping her? Did it mean she was too acidic or too alkaline? Did it mean she couldn't hope for relief from her back pain?

I pondered the diagnosis. I remembered years ago when Cassie was referred to a gastric specialist who used some big
latin term to describe her condition. We went home, Googled it, and found we'd just spent $150 to be told she had a problem stomach. Hey, we knew that already!

So what was this 'electrolytic imbalance' all about? My caller hadn't asked the practitioner what it meant. Did it mean she was too acid, or did it mean she was too alkaline? Both could be termed electroytic imbalance. After all, that's what acid/alkaline balancing is; an increase or decrease in the proportion of positively charged hydrogen ions to negatively charged hydrogen ions. And how would Vitamin C help her bad back or her 'electrolytic imbalance'?

But here was a lady in some distress because, like us, she had paid for and was taking supplements for, a diagnosis she didn't understand! I attempted to fathom it by a bit of reverse logic; if the practitioner had prescribed Vitamin C in a less acid form then her 'electrolytic imbalance' may have meant she was still too acidic.

But why didn't the practitioner
say that?

You know, we have access to the biggest medical change technology in the world right now. It's called Google and for some practitioners it's a curse, for others a blessing, depending on how important it is for them to maintain authority over their clients. If it is important for a practitioner to feel in control, Google represents unnecessary intrusion and perhaps wasted consultation time as the practitioner tries to explain that alien life forms have not been implanted in your blood by invading species last full moon. I understand the problem; I spend quite a deal of time explaining to people that what they read on the net about alkalizing water is not necessarily so and that they really do need to trust me if they want me to help tham.

However, education is enlightenment and enlightenment is freedom to choose through awareness rather than ignorance. The very fact that information - if you know where to look - is available on every aspect 0f your health - is a challenge not only to practitioners -but to each and every one of us.

The break came for my client when she said 'You know, I didn't feel right about what the practitioner said."

She began to talk about her own past as nurse and how she had always been able to keep abreast of health issues. She was disapponted, perhaps - that she had allowed the practitioner to dictate what she needed and give a diagnosis she couldn't understand.

I believe that the more we give away our power, the more it will be taken from us. Power, like everything else we do or say, is a habit. And habits can get out of control. It's too darn easy to give away your own power of health management. then you can blame the doctor, Big Pharma, the government, the environment, pollution... it's just too easy to be a victim. And yes, it is harder to be a hero. But we all need to be our own hero. we all need to learn what it is that allows us to be the wonderful entity we have become. It is our vehicle of life; our body. And if we give it less care than our computer or car, then we can expect to inhabit it for less time and in less comfort.

Imagine if a knight in shining armour galloped up to your door today and said "I give you more power than you have ever known to control your own future." Would you be scared of the change it may involve? Or would you grasp it with both hands and bless your luck? That's what is being offered today. The power to manage your own health future. The power to remain a hero rather than a victim.

Sure, I also speak with many people who have health conditions that seem to have come to stay with no evidence of any victimhood on the person's part. Yet even with these people there are some who remain in contact with me. I think of one; she reads this letter so I'm not going to use her name - who is extremely debilitated from rheumatoid arthritis, that most cruel of visitors. Yet every time we talk I walk away feeling better because she is still not a victim. She still gives, she still explores, she still helps where the moment allows. If I am ever stricken with a similar condition I hope and trust that the example she has given me will be strong enough in my mind to model my own response upon her.

Health management may seem selfish.. until you come to understand that staying healthy is a prerequisite to remaining in service of others.

A New and studied Approach to Ageing.

Here's the Primo video of the week of Dr James Campbell, geriatrician. If you are looking at your own ageing process, this amazing man has some great new ways of looking at this frightening future we are all facing. Be warned; it's almost an hour

Now here's a VERY welcome website!

This site lets you learn about all those tests the doctor sends you off to have, in language you can understand. Now there's a useful service!

Here it is

Fast Food = fatty Liver

A new study shows us the effect on our liver of high GI foods, and it isn't really surprising.

Diets rich in rapidly-digested carbohydrates not only expand waistlines, but may also cause fatty liver, a condition that can lead to liver failure and death, finds a new study in mice. If confirmed in humans, the findings suggest that fatty liver disease -- on the upsurge among Americans as a byproduct of the obesity epidemic -- may be preventable and possibly treatable through dietary changes. The study appears in the September issue of the journal Obesity.

The researchers, led by David Ludwig, MD, PhD, director of the Optimal Weight for Life program at Children's Hospital Boston, fed mice either a high- or a low-glycemic index diet. High-glycemic index foods, including white bread, white rice, most prepared breakfast cereals and concentrated sugar, raise blood sugar quickly. Low-glycemic index foods, like most vegetables, fruits, beans and unprocessed grains, raise blood sugar slowly.

On the high-glycemic index diet, mice ate a type of cornstarch that is digested quickly whereas on the low-glycemic index diet, mice ate a type of cornstarch that is digested slowly. The diets had equal amounts of total calories, fat, protein, and carbohydrate, and the mice were otherwise treated identically.

After six months, the mice weighed the same. However, mice on the low-glycemic index diet were lean, with normal amounts of fat in throughout their bodies. Mice on the high-glycemic index diet had twice the normal amount of fat in their bodies, blood and livers.

When sugar melts out of high-glycemic index food, Ludwig explains, it drives up production of insulin, which tells the body to make and store fat. Nowhere is this message felt more strongly than in the liver, because the pancreas, which makes insulin, dumps the hormone directly into the liver, where concentrations can be many times higher than in the rest of the body. Fat buildup in the liver, or fatty liver, is usually symptomless, but it increases the risk for liver inflammation, which can progress to hepatitis and, in some cases, liver failure.

Am I glad I have this knowledge! It really isn't hard to make a dietary superannuation plan that works based on smart eating.~ Ian

Going Wholesale

Since I talked about helping yourself by buying our Tropical Traditions Virgin Organic coconut Oil by the case - wholesale, I've had lots of readers contact me and begin their own 'friends and neighbours' distribution business. So many people, in fcat, that we're down on stock in a few lines.

Some are selling the oil to their workmates, their church members, or just within their family circle. It's a great idea because once you've experienced the benefits of a good virgin organic coco oil like Tropical Traditions, then like Cassie and I, you'll see it as a health necessity, not a luxury.

So if you haven't taken the leap yet, call us and if you want to take it further, have a think about also getting our Footsies detox foot patches wholesale as well. These are a consistent seller for us because they really do work so well!

I've had all sorts of stories from users. The one that stands out is a lady in Canberra who built her dream house on an old sheep dip, began to grow her dream organic vegies, and wondered why she and her kids were suddenly full of arsenic.

I wanted to know whether the patches were doing what they said they would, so I had two of her used patches tested at a laboratory using gas chromatography.

Sure enough, the used patches were loaded with arsenic!

They are simple to use and obvious in effect. We have one lady selling heaps of them at her local market, but if you just hand out two patches and tell people to try them out, they'll be back for more! If you haven't tried them yet, email us at info@ionlife.info and give them a try, or just order them straight from our website here.

Learn what your blood has to tell you

Had a call from Phil Burton in Victoria today. Phil is one of only two accredited Dr Young trained live blood analysts, so he's very busy indeed. Phil was talking about how many people he sees are acidic and how they are so amazed when they actually see those 'glass shards' of acid in their blood.

I heartly recommend anyone wondering about acidity to contact Phil and take a test. To actually see your own live blood and what else is in it - is proof positive. There's simply no argument because you can actually see what is running around in your veins; the parasites, the sturdy worker lymphocytes, the heavy metals... and Phil's excellent training under Dr Young has given him the ability to interpret what you're looking at!

A Well Planned Exit

A lovely story about a professor giving the last lecture of his life.

Here

A Strange Conjunction of Events

Event One; I get three spam emails from the same sender, advising me to invest in Oncology Med. Inc., a 'Cancer Treatment Solutions Group' which they claim has experienced over a 1000% increase in revenues for the fiscal 3rd quarter ending July, 2007 compared with the prior year while fiscal fourth quarter results for 2007 are on track to exceed this year's third quarter results.

The Spams advised me;
"Don't wait for the news to come out and lose the opportunity to get in front of the general investing public. Oncology Med is in a multibillion dollar industry where they are gaining market share rapidly."

Yep, business is obviously good.

Event Two:
Maree, one of our alkaline specialists received a call from one of her customers. The customer's neighbour had cancer so she told her that she could come in at any time and take free alkaline water. The neighbour took up her offer. Some months later the client asked the neighbour how she was going. "Oh, the cancer is in remission. I asked the doctor if the alkaline water could have helped - and he scoffed."

It'd be an economic calamity if water assisted cancer, wouldn't it?......

Time for a laugh

Today's paper reports that a meteorite fell near a village in Peru. As it struck, it united with minerals in the ground, causing some nasty off-gassing which affected some 600 villagers who came to have a peek at the hole in the ground. Of course, they got upset. But here's the bit I found funny.

"It was reported that the villagers are afraid that other space objects could fall."

I couldn't help but think of 600 people walking around looking up for more space objects. Perhaps it will cause a genetic effect and their kids will be born looking upwards.

Unscented Organic Virgin Coco Oil

We're getting so many people calling us up for our Tropical Traditions Coco oil now we have had some supply problems. One is our 'Expeller Pressed' oil. This is still the same amazing quality as the fully aromatic one but it's heated a little more in the process to remove the flavour. We ran out because people realised how good it was. So we are getting in 4L tubs this time. If you want one, be quick. Ring us on 1800-268 469

We still have 4L non-expeller pressed and 1 litre jars, even though many people have taken up our offer to buy wholesale and save. If you buy a 'slab' you save a lotta money!

Calcium and Elderly People

Two studies from the UK suggest that supplementation with calcium and vitamin D is not effective for preventing fractures in older people.

These studies were published in the British Medical Journal and The Lancet. Both studies involved thousands of elderly people over the age of 70 who were at high risk for bone fractures.

In each study, the treatment group was given calcium and vitamin D, along with advice on reducing their risks of falling. The control groups were only given the advice to reduce their risks of falling. The results showed that overall, the incidence rate of fractures was less than what was expected for all participants, but there really was no difference in the rates of fractures between the control and the treatment groups.

Does this mean that calcium and vitamin D don't work? Not really.

The compliance by subjects declined to 63% and even lower after two years. This means several people didn't take the supplements properly. Another interesting point is that all the participants were given advice on how to limit their risk of falling. This advice was apparently successful, since the fracture rates were lower than expected for all the participants of the studies. These confounding factors may have skewed the results a bit.

Despite the flaws, these studies show that calcium and vitamin D alone may not be sufficient to reduce the risk of fractures in high-risk elderly people.

Additive Alert; Bringing Internet Power to our kids' food

Helen, another of our clients sent me this very interesting website dedicated to educating parents about the additives that their kids may be ingesting at the school tuckshop.

I'm always interested in new ways of giving consumer power back using the Net; the real purpose of this amazing medium.

Lemon and Alkaline Water

Helen emailed me this week:

Dear Ian,

as per your last newsletter, we should not take lemon with our alkaline water?
Please clarify.
Helen

Helen, what I said was that Dr Susan Lark, alkaline specialist made the statement that it isn't as simple as just taking lemon daily to alkalize. She is saying that the complexity of our metabolism and the fruit sugar in the lemon or its juice may well overpower the smaller amounts of alkaline minerals in the lemon.

And no, you don't have to worry; you can indeed add lemon juice to your ION LIFE alkaline water if you so choose. Me, I like it straight.

Arnie Schwarzenegger hits on fast food

California took the lead last week on a trio of health and food safety policies that could set the stage for new trends — and controversy — in healthy eating.

Cloned-food Labelling

The California Senate and Assembly passed the first law in the U.S. requiring manufacturers or producers to clearly label any food intended for human consumption that contains products from a cloned animal or its progeny. The legislation also requires sellers of all cloned livestock to disclose that fact at the time of the sale. The legislation is necessary now because the FDA is expected to approve adding cloned products into the food chain as early as this year — making the U.S. the first country in the world to allow products from cloned animals to be sold for consumption.

The FDA approved a draft last December that meat and milk from cloned cattle, pigs and goats are "as safe to eat as food from conventionally bred animals."

"People have the right to know if food is organic, if it contains pesticides or growth-promoting hormones, or if it's from cloned or natural-bred animal," Californian Government spokesperson Migden said. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has until Oct. 15 to sign or veto the bill. The California Farm Bureau Federation has asked the governor to veto the bill, arguing, "It would act as a ban on the technology, and … provides no useful information to consumers."

But groups such as the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Food Safety and Yonkers, N.Y.-based Consumers Union are urging Schwarzenegger to sign it. Rebecca Spector, West Coast director for CFS, called the bill "a critical step for protecting consumers from the risks of untested cloned foods. Animal clones should not be used for food until long-term studies show that this technology can be used safely and humanely."

Consumers Union released a poll in May showing that 89 percent of Americans said they want to see cloned food labeled and that 69 percent said they are concerned about cloned meat and dairy products in the food supply.

The Center for Food Safety released a report in February saying there is little scientific evidence for the safety of food from clones and arguing that studies reviewed by the FDA found abnormalities and defects in animal clones.

Menu labeling

The California Assembly passed a bill requiring fast-food outlets and chain restaurants with 15 or more locations to provide nutrition information on standard menu items. The bill, SB 120, requires that the number of calories be posted on menu boards and that the number of calories, grams of saturated fat, trans fats, sodium and carbohydrates be provided on printed menus. Proponents — which include the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the California Center for Public Health Advocacy, the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society — say the bill addresses growing health risks posed by obesity and argue that consumers have a right to know what a menu item contains before they order it. Opponents, including the California Restaurant Association, say it is expensive and impractical, and are urging Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to veto it.

New York City passed a similar measure in July, but it was struck down recently by a judge who ruled it conflicts with federal law.

Fast-food restaurant limits

In another bid to staunch growing obesity rates among children as well as adults, Los Angeles could join the ranks of cities looking to limit the growth of fast-food restaurants. The City Council is set to vote Sept. 18 on an ordinance that would impose up to a two-year moratorium on new fast-food restaurants in South Los Angeles. Some 46 percent of restaurants in the area are fast-food chains, compared with 12 percent on the west side, according to a survey by the Los Angeles Times. The area, whose residents are largely lower-income and have higher obesity rates, has fewer restaurants overall and fewer grocery stores than other parts of the city, the newspaper reported.

The proposal is another in a series of measures aimed at addressing the link between the high-fat foods on fast-food menus and obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. City Councilwoman Jan Perry, whose district includes South Los Angeles, proposed the ordinance, saying the higher obesity rates in the area have made it a public health issue and that residents should have healthier choices. Critics see it as an attempt by government to control social behavior.

Ian: I have to say, I'm seriously and agreeably impressed by Arnie's green and clean efforts in the state of Californicatia.

The Power of ION

Few people understand what an ION is. Basically, it's an atom with either a positive or negative charge of electricity. Fewer people have any idea of why ions are important. After all, what has atoms got to do with life, right?

As we drove back from the Gold Coast on Friday Night I noticed a huge billboard with a pic of a Kiwi footballer and the title 'ION POWER. My interest piqued, noted the website on the ad and guess what? Now a whole football team is wearing negative ion-emitting jerseys!

They've done the lab tests and have found that the negative ions, excited by sweat, have given players up to 2% better performance.

When you look at 2% it doesn't see a lot, but when you think about the competition also chasing an extra percent of performance, they obviously reckon it's worth it.

Of course we've been well aware of the performance enhancing properties of negative ions and that's what our business is really all about. Alkalizing in any form increases your internal negative ion count, air ionizers allow you to ingest negative ions, water alkalizers give you half a glass of negative ions to every glass you pour, and our foot patches use Tourmaline to emit negative ions.

I just wish we could find someone willing to step up and test our water on a whiole team. There's a grand final awaiting soemone with that extra two percent!

Dr Ralph Moss and cancer statistics.

Dr Moss is a leading reporter and commentator on cancer treatment, and has been published in many journals including New Scientist. Here's an email I received from him this morning.

"The next time you read a news story about how cancer is decreasingly a problem in the US, think again. California officials have revealed that the US Veterans Administration (VA), which treats many American veterans, has been deliberately withholding cancer incidence data from state cancer registries across the country. This has resulted in up to 70,000 newly diagnosed cancer cases - about 5 percent of the national total - going unrecorded in the past few years. "

Dr Lark throws a spanner in the works about alkalizing with lemons

Dr Susan Lark sends me an email every few days. She's the author of the book 'The Chemistry of Success' all about maintaining peak performance through maintaining a natural alkaline balance (Don't Amazon it; it's out of print!)

She replies to another letter below about citrus and alkalinity. That's why I concentrate on greens rather than oranges and yellows these days.

"Dear Dr. Lark,
You made the statement that “acidic foods make it difficult for your body to achieve a healthy acid/alkaline, or pH, balance.” While this statement is true, you imply that acidic foods like oranges adversely impact the body’s pH balance. On the contrary, while these foods are indeed acidic, they make the urine alkaline, not acidic, and do not adversely affect the body’s pH balance." — Lisa

"Dear Lisa,
I cannot tell you how many emails I get about the pH debate. There is a school of thought that teaches that foods such as oranges, lemons, apple cider vinegar, etc. turn alkaline in the body once they are eaten. This is not so. These foods (and others like them) are considered to be very acidic because their alkaline mineral content is extremely low. Thus, these foods have no internal buffering from minerals to bring up their own pH and thereby counteract their naturally high acid content. And while it is technically true that these foods do become much more alkaline in the body when you consume them, it’s only because all acidic foods have to be buffered by your body’s own pH-regulating system to maintain the slightly alkaline pH of your blood. This occurs partially at the expense of your bones, which will release and deplete their own alkaline minerals to keep your blood pH slightly alkaline. In addition to limiting citrus fruits and vinegar, you’ll also want to reduce your intake of other highly acidifying foods such as meat, alcohol, sugar, and caffeine. Digesting and metabolizing protein (especially red meat, pork, poultry, dairy, and wheat gluten) creates an astonishingly excessive acid load and burdens your buffer system. Although protein is an essential component of healthy bones, you should avoid eating too much of it and choose less acidifying sources. Wild-caught salmon and other fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, organic eggs, and free-range poultry are better animal-based protein sources if you need meat in your diet."

Thank you, Dr Lark!

Power From Water. See it happen!

On this blog I talk quite often about the way our water alkalizers change the formation of ordinary H2O, creating a water molecule with far more available hydrogen. Now a backyard inventor has demonstrated how to burn sea water. Sounds great, but what if it really works? I like the sea just the way it is, thank you, and so do quite a few fishes!

A Wee Scottish Parasite Problem

OBAN, SCOTLAND — The larvae of midges have made their way from the local water supply here to residential faucets, and customers are concerned. The worm-like creatures, which are up to 6 millimeters in length, look like particles in the drinking water.

Scottish Water identified the particles as midge larvae, noting that an abnormally large number of them clogged one of their filters. This allowed some to enter the supply. The water company called the problem an “aesthetic issue,” saying that the water was safe to drink. It tested customers’ water and supplied them with bottled water as a courtesy.
One Scottish Water customer, Scott Hetherington, told the BBC News that in a glass of water, the larvae are difficult to spot. However, 20 or 30 will cluster together, forming a more easily visible ball.

Ian: I hear there has been an increase in sales of Scotch locally!

Fitness for Wrinklies

You know, we often forget that if we don't USE our body, all those supplements and gizmos will be pretty darn useless, especially as we age. I've come to love my daily yoga after meditation, and our walk around Cape Byron is a total blessing. But I also know that when I'm too busy to maintain my regimen, I can almost feel the pull of the Earth on my body; Come home! come home!

And I see how everything slows down. That's called - I believe - AGEING.

Here's a minimum exercise regimen as suggested by the American College of Sports Medicine in cooperation with the American Heart Association.

1. Aerobic activity.
On a 10 point scale where sitting is 0 and all-out maximal effort is 10, you need to do a minimum of 30 minutes five days a week moderate intensity activity, or a minimum 20 mins a day 3 days a week.

2. Muscle Maintaining and Strengthening
You should perform some form of strength training a minimum 2 days a week. There should be 8 to 10 exercises using major muscle groups (my yoga!) It also says you should use weights that allow about 10-15 reps per exercise, and I use 5kg dumbells

3. Flexibility
You are also encouraged to do at least ten minutes flex and stretch 2 days a week, addressing major muscles. I love to do situps, the Surya namaskar (Salute to the Sun) pelvic twists and leg stretches.

When Movies Become Reality: The Constant Gardener

Remember that Ralph Feinnes movie set in Africa where his wife discovered that Big Pharma was using the local people as drug dummies - giving them experimental drugs and watching the results to create data to approve them? Chilling is my best adjective for the effect it had on me.

Now it appears that in 1996 the drug Giant Pfizer used about 200 Nigeriankids as guinea pigs during a meningitis epidemic. Trovan Floxacin was administered; a drug not licenced for use anywhere in the world. results, according to the kids' parents, ranged from deafness to death.

Of course, a US court dismissed the less well heeled Nigerian plaintiff's attempt in court for justice.

One of the whistle blowers was Medicines Sans Frontiers, that wonderful group of medical practitioners who cross borders to administer free surgical help in some of the worst war zones on earth. MSF sources say the Pfizer doctors wanted to compare drugs, so when the kids didn't respond, they just kept on dosing them.

"In normal circumstances, the first thing you do when a patient does not respond to a drug when dealing with a killer like meningitis is to change the drug. They did not do this. they kept them on it, an authoritative MSF souce said.

Vale Anita Roddick

Anita Roddick, trailblazing Green advocate and founder of The Body Shop died this week, aged 64, of a brain haemorrage.

I am saddened by our loss of a magnicent woman who was able to use her chosen business model as a highly successful platform for human rights and environmental issues.

81 Year Old Alkalarian !

I had a call from June this week. She told me that her cholesterol had dropped from 6.1 to a perfect 5.6, and in the space of two months, with no change of diet, she's dropped 2.5 kilo.

The funny thing is that when she told her doctor how she did it, the doctor tried to convince her that it was all because of the doctor's diet recommendations. She said she was worried about her kidney function, and told her she should have a blood test. Surprise, surprise; when the test came back, June rang the doctor's receptionist who said 'Oh, it says 'No Action'.'

And what's so cool about this little story - one of the many I share here... is that June, who spends day after day working in her garden, just turned 81!

WindPower on your house for $4000? Cheap!

Here's info on a new wind generator. It's very impressive, doesn't kill birdies like the big ones and is (relatively) quiet.

And I reckon that at US$4000 it would be SO good to get off the dripfeed of diesel and coal powered electrickery, dont you think?

Renewables are getting closer, folks. Don't believe the propaganda! It can be done!

New info on YOU

I just installed a widget that you can check on in the right hand column. It tells us where in the world our shared readers are, in real time. My first look amazed me; people are looking at this blog at 3am in the USA!

Further down you'll see who is reading it - or at least where they came from (their last site). These are amazing days, aren't they?

How Long To 'Fix' A Health Condition

I had a visit from Andrew Cathlie, naturopath, of Thornlie Naturopathic Centre in Perth. Andrew and his family are enthusiastic Alphion users and as we talked the discussion moved to expectations of people about health. Andrew was saying that he kept good notes on his patients so that when they came back six months later he could check on how they had improved. he said in many cases they didn't even remember how bad they had been.

We often have the same situation. A 73 year old lady rang our alkalizing specialists yesterday. "I've been drinking the alkaline water for two months and although I have much more energy, my arthritis hasn't gone yet. can I send it back? I don't think it's working."

We don't promise any therapeutic result, but many people still ask.

Andrew made the point that according to the best authorities in naturopathy, you will take an average of one month healing for every year you have had a health condition. So if a 73 year old lady has had arthritis for 10 years, she has ten months' healing process ahead of her given the right remedy. Many of our clients do have very fast health changes, but the slower processes are often lost to memory unless a good therapist with good records is willing to remind the patient of what they complained about a year ago.

If you are in need of a good naturopath in Perth, give Andrew a call on

Alkaline Foods Guide

Hi Ian, I am keen to learn more about alkalining can you send me information on foods and diet to eat I already have an Alphion and are looking for more ways to help become acid free can you help me? ~James

James, congratulations! You've passed the first post in the long trail towards full 'alkalarian' lifestyle. Now you are using the water, your body is asking for more! That's exactly what happens to so many of us as we reclaim our natural balance. Of course it helps that as we begin alkalizing, our body starts talking to us again and asking - through our mind - for more of the same. It's truly a great example of the fact that we think with our whole being; not just our brain.

It's a huge job to publish all the info on the best alkaline foods. The best resource I've found is 'The Acid Alkaline Food Guide' by Dr Susan E. Brown and Larry Trivieri Jr. It's better than everything else I've come across because it's based on the 'next step' in acid/alkaline residue measurement. You see, all the charts you might find on the net are based on a pretty simple method of ascertaining acid or alkaline effect. The food is cooked to an ash and the pH of the ash is measured. That's all. Pretty basic.

However this little book reflects the new paradigm applied to this method. The type of acid or alkaline minerals left over is analysed and then related to the known effect the particular and individual mix of acid or alkaline constituents would have on the body. It's obvious that different acids have different effect on the body, so this is a quantum leap in food charting. The book also has excellent facts on acid/alkaline balancing. Here's the link.

Avocados cancer Protection

Dr Robert O Young is forever raving about what he calls 'God's Butter'; Avocadoes. It seems he was on the right track.

Nutrients taken from avocados are able to thwart oral cancer cells, killing some and preventing pre-cancerous cells from developing into actual cancers, according to researchers at Ohio State University.

Researchers found that extracts from Hass avocados kill or stop the growth of pre-cancerous cells that lead to oral cancer. Hass avocados are year-round fruits known for their distinctive bumpy skin that turns from green to purplish-black as they ripen.

Lead author of the study, Stephen D'Ambrosio says that avocados are chock-full of beneficial antioxidants and phytonutrients, including vitamin C, folate, vitamin E, fiber and unsaturated fats. They are naturally sodium-free, contain no trans fats and are low in saturated fat, making them a healthy addition to any diet.

“The future is ripe for identifying fruits and vegetables and individual phytonutrients with cancer preventing activity,” writes D'Ambrosio in the journal's editorial. “As we identify the molecular mechanisms and targets by which individual phytonutrients prevent cancer, we may be able to improve upon nature by formulating phytonutrient cocktails for specific cancers and individual susceptibility and risk.”

And what did I have for lunch today? 'Goanna' Gluten free Fice and Arame Bread, toasted with lashings of avocado. Oh, it feels so good to be right every now and then!

All for a Sore Thumb.

Had a call last week from a chap who had decided to go alkaline last year. He had begun to get arthritis in his thumb, and with great foresight, decided that he should alkalize before it spread. He switched to an 85% alkaline diet; no mean feat in itself. The arthritis has gone, and he's full of beans. Not really remarkable exept for one fact.

He's 83

Monsanto's War of Words to keep Real Milk off our tables

In the US, Giant chemical maker and GM seed marketer, Monsanto is taking dairy farmers who have chosen to NOT use their product, Posilac, a recombinant bovine somatotropin, to court. They claim the farmers are using deceptive wording on their milk containers.

Unease about the additive's safety persists. A 2003 report by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association concluded that rBST increased the risk of mastitis in cows by about 25 percent, increased the risk of cows failing to conceive by 40 percent and increased the risk of lameness by 55 percent. While consumers regularly express concern about risks to human health, including premature sexual development, no studies have confirmed these suspicions.

Who'd be a cow these days? Hmm... who'd be a human?

A Shower of Bull____?

EST PLAINS, MO — Residents here are claiming a nearby large, indoor dairy farm is contaminating their water supply, although health officials are not sure if that is true, a September 4 Associated Press story reported.

Resident Sandra Heasley said she was taking a shower last winter when suddenly the water became dark brown and smelled like cow manure. “Can you imagine getting in a shower and having cow manure coming through the shower head?” she said.

Health officials said that Heasley’s water is contaminated, but are not sure if it’s because of the nearby farm.

You Gotta Love Men; They don't!

You know, talking to men and women for years about their future health has yielded a few general insights. One is that men often have real 'blind spots' to protect unhealthy habits and when alerted to them their existence they still don't see them.

Maree, one of our alkaline specialists, sent me some notes she's made of a chap who contacted us:

"Realises has far too much acid in diet, loves beer and rum and a big meat eater, 66, driving a truck, close to retiring age, more and more thinking of health. counts his pennies, and focus on health, being studying metaphysics for years, ultimately more cost effective to buy an alkalizers, nice guy but..."

A Reverse Style rave

As you know, I have to be careful what I say about the effects of drinking alkaline water. There's a million dollar fine for advertising unfounded therapeutic claims. So what about when you talk about someone who gets symptoms of disease when they DON'T use our water?

I had a call from Renee today. Her Alphion Water Alkalizer's electronics are playing tricks and we are fixing it under warranty. Unfortunately Renee lives at the other end of Australia so she' has been without her alkaline water for about a week. And that's all it has taken, she said, for her arthritis to come back.

What Soap For You?

A new report on soaps says that we are better off with ordinary soap instead of antibacterial soap, because antibacterial soaps may cause our resistance to disease to be reduced.
Here's the report, but as I see it there's far more to the question.

Up until a year ago we sold acid based soap, which has a pH more aligned with your skin. Any 'normal' soap is alkaline. A major ingredient of soap is Lye, a very alkaline substance. This really makes no sense when we realise that we already have our own antibacterial system in the body, and a very clever recycling one at that. It's called sweat.

Sweat takes acid wastes and lets them flow onto the skin. Because they are acid, they are also antibacterial, so the (unwashed) body looks after itself by killing bacteria 'on arrival'. It's our first line of defence for that vast area of skin we present to the atmosphere every day.

So what do we modern 'Who-Mans' do with this acid mantle? Wash it off as fast as we can... with ALKALINE SOAP! Then we jump out of the shower and let airborne bacteria come on down for a free, safe feed and multiply session!
Du-Oh!

We gave up on the Circe acid soap for purely economic reasons. It cost too much and didn't sell much because adding freight made it hard to justify without convincing people with what I just discussed here. It's still available here, but there's another helpful way.

Our Atopia Shower Head uses Vitamin C to neutralise chlorine and output mildly acidic water.

Doctor Questions Higher Dosage of Cancer Drugs

Saturday's SMH had an article about a doctor who spoke out about the high dosages of cancer drugs. Dr Ian Haines said that pharmaceutical companies were the only group capable of affording drug trials, and therefore they had enormous control over the scientific evidence presented that determines dosage rates.

In the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the world's foremost cancer journal, he said that new and expensive drugs may be just as effective and produce fewer side effects - if taken over shorter periods and in lower doses. He listed as examples the highly successful (in sales terms) drugs Herceptin, Avastin and Mabthera.

Avastin is commonly dosed at 15mg/kg body weight, but other research shows it equally effective at 3 mg per kilo. Given the enormous cost of these drugs, this is therefore an enormous possible saving to people alreadt threatened with the biggest financial drain of their lives.

The problem is exacerbated by the stone age methods the government uses to collect data on results of usage. Health economist Jeff Richardson told the SMH that Australia was 'absolutely primitive' in its record keeping and that people are dying becasue we are not allowed to use the evidence.

It's all the more sad because with Medicare data we already collect we already have the means to follow though on dosage and outcome, yet the government doesn't allow the data to be used to rein in the big pharmaceutical companies.

In a similar vein, it was also revealed in the weekend Australian that if you are chronically ill and unable to get out of bed, but you have a toothache, you miss out on $4000 worth of free dental care because you have to go TO the dentist and sit in a chair - which of course you can't do because you are chronically ill!..

The Federal goverment's response to this idiocy? 'We can't help it; it's a state matter.'

The Twenty million Dollar man

I had an email from Nadia last week who asked the point of the video about the man talking about children's TV. I'm wondering if anyone else missed it. I'm adding it again below so if you missed it you have another chance to check it out.

The Video moved me to tears. The reason? When someone really loves what they do, their earnestness and honesty overcomes all communication obstacles. The whole world loves a genuine person because most of our communication time in this world seems to be taken up in deciphering the 'real' message behind what people seem to say.

This man was being given
one chance to plead the case for funding choldtren's TV in the USA in an era when 'Tricky Dicky' Nixon was taking the knife to anything he saw as 'unproductive'. (Shades of our present government?) This man didn't use graphs, Powerpoints, statistics or hyperbole. he didn't engage in marketing semantics, and he didn't ven use big words that impress.

He just spoke drect from his heart to the hearts of the senators facing him.

He KNEW that what he did was shaping the kids of America.
He KNEW that the standard coartoon fare of US TV was giving aviolent template for kids.
He KNEW that this was the moment that would make or break the next decade of quality free to air kids' TV program funding, yet he simply spoke from his certainty, at the pace he always used - child-friendly - to a bunch of politicians whose job it was to reduce spending.

And in six minutes of what I call true communication, he not only saved the day for his beloved mission, he received the OK for twenty million dollars in funding.

Perhaps it moved me so much because I am often cast in the position of 'salesman' by the people who call about our alkalizing programs and products, and I admire anyone with the bravery to simply stand in and speak their truth, coming from a place of such certainty that they have dispensed with every subtle sales tactic that may be used to artificially 'inflate' your message. They are the true warrors of words!

Here's the video again:
