Researchers have discovered two genes that play a role in prolonging life. These genes kick into high gear when the amount of calories an organism takes in is reduced.
In the study, the genes SIRT3 and SIRT4 were shown to help protect cells from diseases caused by aging. These genes help to maintain cellular mitochondria and prevent them from dying. As a result, the cells retain the energy they need to stay healthy.
Ian~ So... the only way ypou'll live longer is to eat less. That should make a lot of cows happy.

Ionic Ian,
It's been long proven that periodic fasting (ie calorie reduction) increases the lifespan of rats by 50%, and the yogis in India have long proven that this applies equally to human rats...
But I wouldn't let the cows off the hook! Fresh meat (without chemicals, hormones, antibiotiics, etc) and vegetables/fruit is the longevity diet, not vegetarian. The worst food category for longevity is carbohydrates, most especially starchy items like noodles, rice, bread, and chips, and of course sugar.
Fasting is also one of the few natural ways to stimulate (rather than simulate) the secretion of human growth hormone, even in old geezers like us, and this is another way it boosts longevity.
