OK. The people involved may seem a little er.. off beat. The use of Neti Pots isn't normal in the sense of the dominant paradigm. Neti pots are earthenwarer devices used to 'snort' water up into your nasal cavities to clear them. They are a yogic tool, so one can assume the users are - or were - pretty seriously into yoga. Nothing wrong with that, but death by Neti Pot.. well, that's not cool.
It seems that they got a little lazy and used tap water instead of boiled or distilled water. I
