'For the Times They Are A-Changin'.

I received a report today about 'MOM' My Organic Market, a Washington DC based organics chain deciding to stop supply of bottled water from afar. They've seen the ridiculous carbon footprint of these products and the lunacy of transporting water for thousands of miles.

The bottled water industry has been coming under scrutiny from the media, bconcerned citizens, and numerous non-profit organizations. Questions arebbeing raised over the negative impact bottled water is having on thebenvironment and local communities. Another aspect to the global water justicebmovement is the issue of privatization of a natural resource, which is
becoming increasingly polluted and scarce. The EPA estimates that by 2013
thirty-six US states will experience water shortages.

MOM says: "The decision to take a step towards eliminating bottled water was a fairly easy one. Once we thought about the amount of energy, oil, and waterbthat go into producing, shipping, and disposing of a product that is readily available by simply turning on your faucet, we knew it was the right decision." said Lisa de Lima, the Vice President of Grocery at MOM's. "We are hoping that by discontinuing imported waters, customers who aren't already drinking tap water will consider making the switch." MOM's has replaced the discontinued brands of bottled waters with water filter options as well as reusable bottles.
