Chrissie Evans and her globetrotting AlkaPod

Christine Evans is a girl that gets around. As a performance coach she works worldwide.. and along with her now, wherever she goes, is her AlkaPod Portable water ionizer. She just dropped us an email:

" I was excited to have the Alkapod. Of course I wasn't using it enough at the beginning of this month. I was travelling, on several planes, and switching continents- all times when the alkapod is convenient. I admit is seemed a bit heavy and slow-the alkapod only does about 400ml of water at one time.

Even when I moved into my NYC apartment, I was still racing between training and work, and just using the Alkapod once a day or skipping a day. I was inspired to try it after having a benchtop alkaline system last year and being surprised by some very noticeable health benefits! I am also an athlete, so hydration is important. Many endurance athletes have learned to manipulate their carbs, protein, electrolytes at optimal times and digestion. Why not water?!! I just had too much on my plate!

But I couldn't ignore that the Alkapod's water is incredibly smooth. If you've ever had sinus issues, strep or allergies - when swallowing is not easy - this water slips down, even when you have to use chlorinated tap water. Its silkiness is comforting.

And I kept finding I was drinking more of it. Sometimes after training, it's not easy to keep sipping typical water...but it was easy to drink my Alkapod's water. Studies show that athletes drink far more adequately when their water is sweetened or flavored...I was having the same effect with my Alkapod, and no flavoring needed.

I asked the company about the minerals added, in case this easier hydration was due to minerals, just like bottled mineral water. I still have to find out more. However, the simple answer is that the water undergoes a molecular change from interaction with the minerals in AlkaPod's filter and this gives that clearly different taste and consistency.

I know, it's only water! But if you're an athlete or someone interested in health or fine food, you will know what I am talking about.
I did feel more hydrated---the water seemed to go further.

I have known for years that a top quality protein which is highly hydrolyzed will have an effect on my body in under 14 days. The digestion aspect is crucial. The typical protein on a store shelf doesn't do it. Likewise, this alkapod water was going down easily and I just felt good with it after training.
Without thinking, I naturally started using the alkapod for my night water and water I take to training- only 1-1.5 liters of my daily drinking water. In my no-spare-time New York lifestyle, I'm motivated to wait the 10minutes for each glass my allkapod makes---therefore it's definitely different. At the moment, I can't report any specific health revelations. There's often much hype about water products so I'm quite happy, at the moment, just to let you know that my alkapod's water tastes fantastic and yes, it seems to be incredibly hydrating."

Bisphenol A with your groceries?

Now that the US and other countries are getting serious about reducing the BPA in everyday items like plastic bottles, we hear that BPA is is some places we'd never suspect. let's think of where we wouldn't expect to find this chemical used to make plastic harder.. er.. let me see.. paper!

Good guess, Ian! Paper does indeed have BPA in it in a most unlikely place; in our supermarket receipts!

A new report by the Environmental Working Group shows that paper receipts from grocery stores as well as restaurants, gas stations and automated teller machines contain the chemical bisphenol-A. The EWG said it found varying amounts of BPA in 40 percent of the receipts it tested.

Concern over the chemical has primarily centered on food and beverage containers. But scientists from the University of Missouri Division of Biological Sciences “found that the total mass of BPA on a receipt is 250 to 1,000 times greater than the amount typically found in a can of food or a can of baby formula,” the report said.

The report said that scientists had not determined how much of a receipt’s BPA coating can transfer to people’s skin and from there into the body by ingesting BPA through food or by touching their mouths.

The EWG said retail workers carry an average of 30 percent more BPA in their bodies than other adults, but that it is “unclear how much BPA-coated receipts contribute to people’s total exposure.”

The highest level of BPA was found in receipts at Safeway supermarkets. The highest concentration, 41 milligrams, was found in a store in Washington, D.C. A Safeway spokesman told the Washington Post the store was researching the issue and consulting with its paper receipt suppliers.

Scientists found 10.8 milligrams of BPA on a receipt in a Whole Foods Market store in Superior, Colo., according to the report. The EWG said it was one of 16 receipts (out of 36 tested) containing a "substantial" amount of BPA. Whole Foods had not responded to a request for comment by press time.
Receipts from a Sunflower Farmers Market in Boulder contained 0.145 milligrams, not considered a substantial amount in the report. The report said substantial amounts ranged from 41 milligrams to 2.98 milligrams.

"This is the first that we have heard of this,” said Chris Sherrell, president & chief operating officer of Sunflower Farmers Market. “Sunflower Farmers Market is and always will be committed to providing our customers and their families with the very best. We are concerned about this matter and are investigating the situation.”

Daniel Fabricant, vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs at the Natural Products Association, said from a scientific perspective, “there are still some questions. One study doesn’t make any conclusive decisions. We want to make sure the science is really done in total.”

But because of the concern over BPA now, he expects the market to respond. “I think you’ll probably see some folks coming out with BPA-free receipt paper.”

How sweet it is to sell something you can geta good nights' sleep over!

I get a lot of info passing my desk about happenings in the water business.
Today I saw that a company called Eureka Forbes had used nanotechnology in a water filter they are selling in India. My interest was aroused because they are using a technology we are now seeing pop up in Australia. It's claimed to be far more efficient than normal filters and it uses electrostatically charged alumina fibres to attract contaminants. Sounds good, right? Read on..

Now.. as we know, some countries are 'used' for product testing.. but wow! If that's the case, they sure chose the wrong place this time! Their products were hammered by unhappy users.

The technology comes from a company called Argonide, who sell it under the name NanoCeram. of course, I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with it.. for all i know it may not even be in the product these angry consumers are talking about. All I'm saying is that their customer, Eureka Forbes, stirred up quite a hornet's nest in old India.

Here's the link to some very unhappy consumers.

Dr. Peggy Parker and alkaline ionized water

Dr. Parker is a traditionally trained Naturopathic Physician who resides in Spokane, Washington. She is an internationally renowned teacher and lecturer.

After receiving her Naturopathic degree, Dr. Parker continued her education with a post doctoral degree in Biological Medicine from the PBMN in Lustmühle, Switzerland. This intensive, two year program was designed and led by the famous Swiss physician, Dr. Thomas Rau.

The basic focus of this course revolved around adjusting the pH (acid/alkaline ration within body fluids), ORP (rate of oxidation in body tissues), and the conductivity of minerals across the cell wall membrane, and just how these factors affect health.

In addition to a successful private practice, Dr. Parker consulted with holistic Medical Doctors around the country, served as the Medical Director of Fusion MediSpa in Northern Idaho for several years.

As a physician Dr. Parker has been trained to both administer and evaluate tests including Darkfield Microscopy, Biological Terrain Assessment (QFA), EAV, Electro-Dermal Screening, Computer Regulation Thermography, Tongue and Pulse Diagnosis, Sclerology, Heart Rate Variability, Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis, Applied Kinesiology and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to name a few. In addition to her medical training, Dr. Parker is a gifted medical intuitive and has been trained as a Reiki Master, a Yuen practitioner, a Neuro-Modulation Technique therapist, a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapist, a Lymphatic Drainage Therapist, a Herbalist, an Nutritionist and holds undergraduate training as a counselor.

Dr. Parker became involved with water ionizers in January of 2005. Her primary interest was in the efficacy of this water as a form of treatment. This led her to do extensive testing and research on the topic of ionized water and its impact on health. Dr Parker states:

“As a Biological Medicine Physician, I have been measuring the levels of oxidation in the bodily fluids for about a decade using a very sophisticated piece of lab equipment called the QFA (Quantitative Fluid Analysis). Based on the rate of oxidation in these fluids this measurement device calculates a person’s biological age.

For most of people this biological age is generally 20-50 years older than their actual chronological age. Since it is our biological age that determines the length of our life, that number is quite significant. More than three years of testing and research have led me to the discovery that drinking reduced alkaline water is the most effective tool for quickly, easily and economically changing the rate of oxidation on cells that I have ever encountered.”

"As the cell walls of our body become oxidized, they become sticky and this prevents hydration of the body as well as nutrient absorption and cell waste to be expelled. The -ORP (Ed: Reduction Potential of the water) removes oxidation from the cell wall and allows for better hydration, and cell metabolism and overall cell health."

Johannesburg, you need a TON of water alkalizers.

Millions of litres of highly acidic mine water is rising up under Johannesburg and, if left unchecked, could spill out into its streets some 18 months from now, Parliament's water affairs portfolio committee hears.
Here's the story.

Breast cancer and Stress

Having sessions with a psychologist to learn how to reduce stress helped women with recurrent breast cancer live longer, with better quality of life, according to new research from the US.

Researchers studied women with newly diagnosed Stage II or III breast cancer who were randomly assigned to one of two groups: intervention and assessment-only. In addition to normal assessments, the women in the intervention group had sessions with a psychologist where they learned more about causes of cancer and how to reduce stress, and the other group just had the assessments.

Andersen, who is also a researcher at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, told the press that:

"Patients in the intervention arm evidenced significant emotional improvement and more favorable immune responses in the year following recurrence diagnosis."

"In contrast, stress remained unabated and immunity significantly declined in the assessment-only group," she added.

Previous studies have already shown that psychological stress disrupts the immune system, impairs quality of life, and causes people to neglect their health.

In a previous study where they followed women with breast cancer for 11 years, Andersen and colleagues found that those who received psychological support had a 45 per cent lower risk of their breast cancer recurring.

In this study they wanted to see what effect the intervention might have on survival.

The participants were 227 women with newly diagnosed Stage II or III breast cancer who were randomly assigned to the assessment-only or the intervention group where they received psychological therapy that aimed to help them understand more about cancer and stress, learn practical ways to reduce stress and improve quality of life, and how to stick to a plan to change behavior.

The therapy also covered how to improve communication with their medical team, increase their wellbeing during treatment, speed up recovery and improve their overall health.

During 11 years of follow up, 62 of the participants were diagnosed with recurrent breast cancer. Of these, 23 intervention and 18 assessment-only participants remained available for further further biobehavioral study.

The analysis showed that after recurrence, the women who had previously received the psychological therapy had a 59% lower risk of dying of breast cancer (intention to treat analysis revealed reduced risk of death for intervention arm: hazard ratio of 0.41, P = 0.014).

No More Injections?

Georgia Tech, that powerhouse of innovation has come up with a brilliant alternative to needles.

All your footballers who tremble at them, rejoice, salvation is at hand!
They've miniaturised the needle idea, with hundreds of tiny dissolving needles rather than one big 'un. The needle patch is simply pushed onto the skin, the mini-needles pierce the dermis, and then dissolve, leaving the vaccine. Pretty damn smart!

Try Suing your surgeon for THIS one!

Imagine.. you haven't had surgery for ten years.. and suddenly you are struck down with a disease you can't even pronounce. Would you sue your surgeon of ten years ago? Of course not! But all that is about to change. Check out this report.

"With a few exceptions, the risk of having contracted the sporadic form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) manifests itself at least 10 years after having undergone surgery, according to new research published recently in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.
Jesús de Pedro, the head of prion monitoring at the National Epidemiology Centre of the Carlos III Health Institute, explains, "Based on the monitoring records of spongiform encephalopathy in two Nordic countries, we studied the possibility of transmission of the sporadic form of CJD through general surgery. While we are not ruling out the idea that intraoperational transfusions may play a secondary part, the data suggest that the disease enters and spreads much more quickly within the central or peripheral nervous system."

According to the authors, the fact that computer records of surgeries have been in place since the early seventies in hospitals in Sweden and Denmark enables operations on residents of those countries to be linked to cases of CJD, which "extends an extraordinary quality to the information and more credibility to the findings given the almost total absence of memory bias".
Why is the idea of transmission through surgery important? The most interesting thing about this finding, which points to an external cause that could be prevented, is that "it may signify a shift in our understanding of the nature of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's," de Pedro says.

We might, therefore, ask ourselves if other types of motor neurone diseases can be transmitted through surgery and be latent for decades, such as those where risk factors, particularly physical professions and activities or certain sporting activities, for example, which are more likely to lead to surgery, have already been indicated.
"Suggesting that a disease could have been acquired during healthcare is a very delicate affirmation, as some relatives of patients with sporadic CJD may be tempted to seek compensation from health authorities for the alleged intraoperational transmission years previously, which would be impossible to prove in individual cases," de Pedro adds.
Nonetheless, the most conclusive pattern that the study presents, albeit based on few cases and one that must be replicated in future studies, is that the onset of CJD occurs approximately 10 years after an operation on the retina with reused equipment.

Vitamin D and Asthma? Really?

It appears that asthmatic children with low blood vitamin D levels may have a greater risk of suffering severe asthma attacks.

A study followed more than 1,000 children with asthma for four years, and found those with vitamin-D insufficiency at the outset were more likely to have an asthma attack that required a trip to the hospital.

Reuters reports:
“When the researchers considered other factors -- including the severity of the children's asthma at the study's start, their weight and their family income -- vitamin D insufficiency itself was linked to a 50 percent increase in the risk of severe asthma attacks.”

Of course.. we all know Vitamin D comes from sunshine.. and yes, yes, we all know that lil' Aussies shouldn't go out in the sun too much... and that they are sitting in front of their computers more.. and more.. and more.. so perhaps it really is worth checking out your kids' Vit D levels!

Eric Harr, Pro triathlete, joins the ranks of AlkaSports men and women.

"This device would absolutely help any runner, cyclist, or tri-athlete train better and smarter. Period."

Eric Harr, professional triathlete for 10 years, has tried and tested every conceivable tool, technique, and method in his quest for competitive excellence.

He's also a print and broadcast journalist and has, as he puts it, "Been pitched on virtually every product that claims to improve health, wellness, and performance. So, naturally, I'm a skeptical guy!"

Here's what Eric has to say about his EmcoTech water ionizer.
"I can say with categorical confidence that the Athena has improved my health and my performance in a profound and tangible way. The things that have the most direct impact on my athletic performance are my ability to train and to recover. The Athena has improved both. I can work out with greater intensity because the water clearly helps to buffer lactic acid. It's quite a thrill, as a 'tri-geek,' to leave elite cyclists behind on climbs because they're bathing in lactic acid, while I am pedaling away!"
It's Eric's recovery time that has experienced a quantum leap! "I can finish a 6-hour ride while consuming alkaline water the entire way! And I recover within hours instead of days." He adds, "This device would absolutely help any runner, cyclist, or tri-athlete train better and smarter. Period.

Thermoablation: the new cancer treatment

Using heat to treat cancer has long been a specialty of German medicos. Dr Ralph Moss, my favourite cancer commentator, is quite a fan of the method, but this treatment takes it to a whole new level. Now we see this approach linked with nanotechnology in a simple way. This video demonstrates the process perfectly. (Click on 3D Animation on the site.)

Meningitis with that Sir? Ah.. skip the soda, thank you

This report from the US on samples soda dispensers in fast food joints makes chilling reading. samples included 23 Cokes, 7 Pepsi Colas, 23 Diet Cokes, 7 Diet Pepsi Colas and 27 waters.

"C. meningosepticum was also found in a larger number of beverages and it can cause pneumonia, endocarditis and meningitis in immunocompromised adults and meningitis in neonates. "
 Check it out here

Ya can't win. Just when you thought it was a good idea...

Are you one of those good souls who conscientiously takes your recycle bag to the supermarket? University of Arizona research shows50%+ of 84 reusable bags collected from shoppers in Tucson, LA and the San Francisco Bay area were contaminated with potentially harmful bacteria, including E.coli, a bug found in fecal matter.

How? Meat! Leaking juice/blood. There are other foods that also cause problems of course. The contaminated bag then may cross-contaminate other food if you don't wash the bag before its next use.

Now before you rush out and scrub your bag, just a note. The study was funded by the plastic bag manufacturers of USA.

Sugar for babies

Now, please... make my day and tell me that in your country things are different. tell me that unlike Canada, YOU don't put sugar in baby food. Go on, tell me...... and then read this:

"More than half of foods (53 percent) targeted to toddlers in Canadian grocery stores contain an excessive amount of sugar, according to a new study published in the Journal of Public Health."

Funded by the Canadian Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), the study examined sugar content of 186 foods marketed specifically for babies and toddlers – excluding fruit and vegetable purées – and found that 53 percent contained more than 20 percent sugar. The study’s author said the aim was to highlight the growing category of foods designed for toddlers beyond simple purées and juices, which includes puréed dinners and desserts, and toddler-targeted entrées, dinners, cereals and snacks.

Why am I angry? because it's like a drug dealer giving our kids cocaine. It sets in place a lifelong addiction to the single most acidifying  food we regularly eat.. nay, crave.

It supports early imbalance of intestinal flora, particularly candida, which in turn leaves us in a permanent state of inflammation, and we end up like the seriously sick population we have right now. And then, fifty years later, we go to the doctor for a pill to 'fix' this new problem". It's not new. It's almost as old as you. It's sugar, the biggest most insidious drug in our society.
