Cancer and Breast milk

Health professionals have long espoused the benefits of breast milk.

But only now are researchers discovering that breast milk contains substances that can destroy cancer cells without negatively affecting healthy cells. The substance known as HAMLET (Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made Lethal to Tumor cells)
(Ian: whoever thought that up has too much time to waste) contains a specific protein and fatty acid that occur naturally in breast milk.

They don't yet know for certain that the substance forms spontaneously in milk, but suspect that it may form naturally in an infant's stomach. Most of the studies conducted with HAMLET have been done in laboratories. These experiments have shown that HAMLET kills 40 different types of cancer. Human studies have shown that HAMLET kills cancer cells in patients with bladder cancer. The researchers are currently studying the effects of HAMLET on additional types of cancer including skin cancer and brain tumors. The researchers hope that HAMLET can be used to develop future cancer medicines.

Frankfurter Lovers rejoice. Science has saved you from germies.

Treating frankfurter sausages with scallop-shell powder (SSP) significantly reduces the growth of Listeria monocytogenes (LM) and E.coli 0157:H7, and boosts product shelf life, according to a new study.

The research from the University of Sakarya, Turkey, (Ian: can someone tell me why Turkish researchers care about frankfurters?!?) found that immersing the sausages in SSP slurry for 10 minutes prior to packing inhibits growth of the foodborne bacteria.

The study - Inhibition of Listeria Monocytogenes and E.coli 0157:H7 on Frankfurters using Scallop-shell Powder – said the treatment also cut the natural flora of frankfurters “without changing any sensory or chemical properties” of the meat. The paper has been published in the Journal of Food Safety.

Authors Tulay Bodur et al concluded the method could be used as an alternative process to producing safer frankfurters with a longer shelf life.

The team said it had carried out the research after the issue of LM and E.coli growth on the sausages was highlighted by the United States Department of Agriculture as a problem. Around 500,000 pounds of cooked, ready-to-eat meats were recalled in the US from April 2006 to March 2009 due to Listeria contamination. E.coli has also been flagged as an issue with frankfurters because of improper heat processing or possible cross-contamination after processing, said the team.

Ian: Yeah, now all you need worry about is the additives, the MSG, the nitrates, the salt, the preservatives and the FAT. Rejoice!

Another Bloody Water

Boy, the plastic water business must be tough. I picked this bottle up at the local supermarket.

You know that lab test you had sent away.. well there is good news and there is....

Well, well, well. Now scientists are discovering that wildly fluctuating DNA results in routine tests carried out at Pathology labs may be due to the standard plastic test tubes we all use.

Here's the report

Spotlight on You

When Dr. Bernhard Sengstock heard about alkaline, ionized water, he was at first quite skeptical. But when one of his patients explained the remarkable, often seemingly miraculous benefits of alkaline ionized water, Dr. Sengstock decided to give it a try. Before he started passing out the water to his patients, he thought it practical to make himself a case-study for IonWays water.

Every year, Dr. Sengstock challenges his stamina with a 3½ mile, soft-sand run. With every passing year, his run along the Atlantic Coast of Long Island proved more and more difficult. Joint pain and lack of energy hindered his ability to complete the goal he had set for himself year-after-previous-year. In an effort to test the water's ability to improve his results on the sand, Dr. Sengstock began drinking a half-gallon of IonWays water every day for two weeks. It was only after he finished his annual run without joint pain and energy to spare that he became an of our water!

Dr. Sengstock knows that water is essential to the human body and its many complex systems - water is the single most important element for its health, playing a major role in the detoxification process and the reduction of free radicals; which are like movie stars in the process of degeneration. Along with drinking IonWays alkaline, ionized water, Dr. Sengstock believes in creating health - not chasing it.

He believes in proper exercise, diet, and keeping the body aligned through regular chiropractic care. Mental and spiritual health, stress reduction, and a positive outlook on life, are essential. A nutrient-rich diet, the avoidance of toxic environments, and drinking IonWays water may make a body healthy, happy, and productive!

Dr. Sengstock is the owner of a multi-specialty, natural healing center on Long Island, NY. He is a member of the New York State Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Association, and the International Chiropractic Association. Dr. Sengstock encourages his patients to drink IonWays water and has seen a tremendous amount of positive feedback, including the areas of weight-loss, increased energy, and one patient who used the acidic water to help heal a diabetic foot ulcer.

Light Frequency and Plant Growth

We've all heard of GrowLux lights; most often talked about in relation to homegrown 'herbs'.
Here's a report on a different type of light that actually reduces nitrates (reductions up to 65%!) in plants and increased natural carbohydrate content.

The researchers grew lettuce, marjoram, and green onions to harvest time in a greenhouse in daylight conditions with supplementary lighting from standard high-pressure sodium lamps. The plants were then given a 3-day treatment with a solid-state illuminator which generates high-density photosynthetic photon flux.In addition to reducing nitrate concentration, solid-state illuminators create less radiant heat than high-pressure sodium lamps, allowing a high intensity of photosynthesis, and only need to be used for short periods of time rather than over the whole growth cycle.

Enough Said: A Novel way of celebrating World water day

Solidarité from La Boite Concept on Vimeo.

So you think you can eat enough greens to alkalize without supplements or alkaline water?

US Surgeon-General, David Satcher, blasted the health establishment rules at the Greenville Hospital System’s Minority Health Summit. he blasted the apathetic attempts at nutrition by the average American, and pointed out the consequence; massive diabetes outbreaks across the nation. Diabetes, the focus of the fourth annual minority health event at the Carolina First Center, messes up almost every organ system in the human body, Satcher said. It’s a cause of blindness, limb amputations, kidney failure, heart disease and stroke. The Satcher prescription calls for at least 30 minutes of exercise five days a week and a minimum of five servings of vegetables and fruits daily. Better yet, he said, 60 minutes and nine servings. Also, eat whole grains instead of foods made with white flour, brown rice instead of white, and choose low- or nonfat dairy products."

This is very interesting to me. Last night I watched the ABC Science show, Catalyst, (see it here) where Australian researchers at the Garvin Institute showed the correlation between fibre intake and
inflammation. They have actually observed this link, the first time ever, between fibre, bacteria and cells.

Fibre is the 'chaff' for the horses - in this case the kilo and a half of bacteria in our gut. The bacteria feed on the fibre,
and in doing so, ferments it into short chain fatty acids, which then come into contact with immune cells. Receptors on the immune cells use these short chain fatty acids as 'signal' activators. When they meet, the receptor on the cell signals the immune cell to 'get to work' reducing inflammation. The program interviewed a woman in Perth who has had spectacular results in improving both her diabetes and her cholesterol just by ensuring she took in 40 grams of fibre every day. The program called this a 'whopping amount' pointing out that most of us only get around 12grams.

To me, 40 grams isn't 'whopping'. It's the 12 grams that are whopping. Whoppingly inadequate and indicative of the total failure of our system to educate us about diet. Of course it's easy to blame the fast fooders, the school lunches, the Cokes.. but really, 40 grams isn't 'whopping' in our household and we love what we eat.

There are two important points I want to share here. Firstly; we still have a few of that amazing DVD "Simply Raw' where we see ordinary '12 gram' people beat their Diabetes 1 and 2, on a raw diet. So is it the raw food or the fibre, or both?

I believe the raw food that the people in the DVD consumed was exceptionally good, organic etc, AND high fibre, so it worked both ways. I also believe their diet suddenly gained greenery - that is, they began eating greens as well as fibre, so they began to alkalise.

We've heard many stories from alkalizing clients who were struggling with diabetes but we can't legally talk about them here. But it's my belief that alkalizing and fibre and greens are all MAJOR contributors to the return to vitality.

Inflammation is a big news right now. Look up inflammation diets on Google and you'll see they are a hot subject. It's just so obvious; inflammation happens through excess acidity, and excess acidity is a result of inflammation. Yes, fibre gets our immune system to reduce inflammation with the help of our gut flora, but our immune system is only capable of working if it's healthy, wellfed and strong, which brings us back to greens, hydration and alkalizing.

The beauty of our human bodies is the interdependence of all of its aspects. A kidney isn't just a kidney. It does what it does as an eliminator, but it supports or takes part in so many other important functions. And when we see this kind of research identifying one such inter-relationship of fibre to immune cells, it reminds us of our own magnificent body.. and hopefully allows us to give it a little more care and attention.

I love this stuff! I love to see what I am capable of in this amazing age of scientific advances and release and sharing of information! And I love to watch my mind connect the dots between these isolated facts and studies. Alkaline balance is to do with everything we do; heart, elimination, immunity, lungs, skin... It is, to me, the base, the substrate of our body systems. Ignore it at our own risk, yet as David Satcher pointed out, most of us are doing just that.

Fish Pharms

It's accepted in science circles that we have a problem in Australia with pharmaceuticals in our water. They come from people dumping them down the loo, but also from chemicals rinsed off in the shower - and who doesn't do that?

This National Geographic infographic shows the pharmaceuticals found in a fish caught in the lake off Chicago. Worth the click.

So we know the problem; what about the answer? This one is a super doozie of a pollutant. We don't know the effects, or how long it will take for them to happen. In fact we know almost nothing about it except that there is only one method of removing it.

Bad News for Tank Water Drinkers

Drinking from rainwater tanks may mean of unacceptable levels of lead, according to scientists from the University of Technology, Sydney.

They assessed the water quality of water stored in household tanks around Sydney, and found 45% - almost half of them contained lead exceeding the amount considered safe by the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

That wasn't all; turbidity (murkiness) exceeded acceptable levels, as did pH levels. (Why am I not surprised; people have been telling us for years that their water tanks are acidic!)

The researchers weren't sure where the lead came from . Perhaps I can help them out. I had a man from Nimbin come in with a water test of his roof runoff tank water. He was livid; it had jet fuel in it. Yes, Nimbin is under a busy Brisbane-Sydney flight corridor. So surely it's not unreasonable to expect that lead in the atmosphere, plus all the other contaminants floating about, would be washed into our water tanks?

In my view, it's unreasonable to expect anything else! The Darling Downs in Queensland has long been a pollution hotspot, caused by agricultural chemicals from aerial spraying drifting onto buildings that conveniently provided a large area collector in the form of a roof, which all washed into water tanks with the next downpour.

So a water filter that removes lead, pesticides, chemicals, and jet fuel is not a luxury; it's a necessity for water tank water drinkers. And if you can bring the pH back to a more health-supporting alkaline, all the better.

Sorry, but... Fruit and vegetables aren't going to cancerproof you.

A study of 400,000 people has come to a disturbing conclusion.

Yes. it's comprehensive.. 142,605 men and 335,873 women recruited for the study between 1992 and 2000. The participants were from 23 centers in ten Western European countries--Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Detailed information on their dietary habit and lifestyle variables was obtained. After a median follow-up of 8.7 years, over 30,000 participants were diagnosed with cancer.

The authors found only a
small inverse association between high intake of fruits and vegetables and reduced overall cancer risk. Vegetable consumption also afforded a modest benefit but was restricted to women. Heavy drinkers who ate many fruits and vegetables had a somewhat reduced risk, but only for cancers caused by smoking and alcohol.

Here's the report. But.. I still love my fruit and vegies.

It's all coming together...

It doesn't happen often enough, but when it does, it feels good. I'm talking about those moments when everything you read, everything you see, coalesces and supports your primary direction.

You know it. We've all had it. It's as if the universe is supporting you.

This article here is just one of them. It deals with a new report on the acidification of the oceans due to excess carbon dioxide, which, you may suggest, has little to do with acid/alkaline balance. But I believe it does. It reflects the immutable laws of balance in the world and in each of our bodies. Upset the balance and you begin to see the calamitous nature of your actions. Whole oceans die, and in us, a similar upset of our acid-alkaline balance has similar long and short term effects. But I experience far more. Sure, the big 'C" is the most obvious effect of excess acids, but now we learn that diabetes may be caused by excess free radicals, which are, as we know, a result of excessively acidic lifestyle.

And then we have immunity and toxins. Excessive acidity lowers immunity; that's common knowledge, but lower immunity fails us as toxin levels rise - and toxin levels in our bodies are always rising as we live the acidic lifestyle. So we age because we become more toxic, we lose immunity as we age and become more acidic, and the two factors together can now begin to be seen in lower lifespans in the UK for the first time this century. (My apologies, Poms, but well... you do have a bit of a reputation) Toxicity + free radicals + inflammation + lower immunity... I'm amazed some people can get out of bed in the morning!

But the good news is that we can rebalance. The science is clear; more alkalizing greens and water, less acidifying foods... the only reason most people can really give for not becoming more alkaline is that they are happy with the limited form of life they live.

And they call us an advanced civilisation. Oh Boy.

Cancer Imposter Mimics Healthy lymphocyte

Researchers have identified tumors that avoid destruction by mimicing the body's immune system.

Some tumors "disguise" themselves as lymph tissue in order to attract and reprogram T-cell lymphocytes. T-cells destroy bacteria, viruses and other pathogens that invade the body. They also destroy cells and tissues that exhibit abnormal growth, such as tumors.

Some tumors even secrete a protein that is also secreted by lymph nodes. The protein allows the tumor to transform its outer layer into something that resembles lymph tissue. According to lead author Melody Swartz, "The tumor tricks the body into thinking it is healthy tissue."

The result; immune cells do not detect the tumor as a harmful substance and it is allowed to grow and spread unchecked in the body.

Disease and the Alkaline Diet

My friend Ross from Energise for Life in the UK sent me a great email recently citing scientific studies that "Scientifically Proved" the efficacy of alkaline minerals .. here's a few quotes:

Last year, (October 2009), a Cambridge University study published in the highly respected British Journal of Nutrition stated:

“The concept of diet-induced ‘acidosis’ as a cause of disease has been a subject of interest for more than a century. The present article reviews the history of our evolving understanding of physiological pH, the physiological support for the concept of ‘acidosis’, the causes of acidosis, how it is recognised, its short-term effects as well as the long-term clinical relevance of preventative measures, and the research support for normalisation of pH. The available research makes a compelling case that diet-induced acidosis…is a real phenomenon, and has a significant, clinical, long-term pathophysiological effect that should be recognised and potentially counterbalanced by dietary means.1”

The researchers, Pizzornoa, Frassettoa and Katzinger have clearly identified that acidosis (increased acidity in the blood – pH below 7.365) is a very real threat to our health. “Furthermore, our research has shown that the effects of acidosis can directly contribute to various , arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression/psychological dysfunctions, Crohn’s disease, kidney disease.”

Alkaline Minerals and Cancer Growth

In March 2009, Robey, Baggett, Kirkpatrick et al published a paper in the American Association for Cancer Research Journal demonstrating the potential ability of an alkaline minerals (in this case NaHCO3 – sodium bicarbonate) to raise the extracellular pH of cancer tumor cells and inhibit metastasis. Their research shows that the pH of the tumors are always acidic and by using a highly alkaline minerals to raise the pH – the growth of the cancer (and involvement of lymph nodes) may be prevented. Source: Cancer Research 69, 2260, March 15, 2009

In Cancer Research Journal, in 2006, Gatenby, Gawlinski et al researched and discovered that “chronic exposure of normal tissue to an acidic micro-environment produces toxicity by: (a) normal cell death… and (b) extracellular matrix degradation”. They proffer that glucose imbalance (an acid lifestyle) leads to a chronically acidic microenvironment (the normal cells and molecules that surround a tumor cell) which provides the perfect base for cancer. Minerals May Prevent Osteoporosis

A recently published study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (Vol 94, No 1 96-102, 2009) has provided further evidence that supplementation with alkaline minerals is essential for good health. The objective of the study was to understand the effect of alkaline minerals (potassium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate and potassium chloride) on bone health – specifically, the ability of these alkaline minerals to slow the bone resorption rate and calcium excretion. The participants who were taking the bicarbonate supplements had significant reductions in urinary N-telopeptide and calcium excretion when compared to the control group. This means that when taking the alkaline minerals, bones remained stronger and healthier. Source: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (Vol 94, No 1 96-102, 2009)

In the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine, Joseph Campbell provides a thorough review of the scientific literature surrounding minerals and disease and highlights that the alkaline minerals, magnesium and calcium, are critical to the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). He also highlights that “Excessive consumption of acid producing foods, results in metabolic acidosis. When this occurs, the parathyroid hormone stimulates the removal of calcium from the bones and teeth (osteolysis), to buffer or neutralize the excess acidity. After many years, such calcium loss results in depleted bone, bone weakness and structure.” Source: Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine Vol. 10, No. 3 & 4, 1995

Mineral Supplementation and pain relief in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients

This comprehensive study from the Institute for Prevention and Nutrition (Germany) provided clear and unquestionable evidence that using an alkaline mineral supplement (30g daily) reduced pain and increased movement in patients with moderately active Rheumatoid Arthritis over a 12-week period. Source: The Open Nutrition Journal, 2008, 2, 100-105

BTW, here's a link to Ross' website. He does a great job educating people about the benefits of an alkaline diet.

Diabetes; a new understanding of causes

I received a very interesting article from Vitamin Research Products today on the relationship between free radicals (a.k.a. Reactive Oxygen Species) and diabetes. It fills in some gaps in my own understanding of the relationship between alkaline living and diabetes. Over the years we've had many diabetic users report ****** effects of drinking our water. At the same time I have personally experienced the antioxidant effect of drinking our water for the last ten years.
*Suppressed for Australian compliance purposes

When most of us think of insulin resistance— the inability of your cells to use blood sugar, we usually think diabetes. After all, diabetes is one of the earliest warning signs of this common disease. Now new research points to the fact that the threat of insulin resistance may reach further than once thought—revealing links to the metabolic syndrome, cognitive decline and depression plus colon, breast and kidney health and more.

The new kid-culprit on the block behind this deadly connection: excessive free radicals - molecules generated by damaged mitochondria, exposure to toxins, stress and even as a natural consequence of aging.

New cell culture studies have shown that higher free radical levels trigger insulin resistance, while lower levels halve it. It's the first solid evidence that directly implicates free radicals as an actual cause of this destructive process.

Human research has confirmed this finding, revealing a significant increase in insulin resistance among subjects with the highest levels of oxidative stress—even after factors like obesity, the metabolic syndrome and impaired fasting glucose were accounted for.

The conclusion seems to be that managing insulin resistance isn't a single-step process. Slowing the descent toward full-blown diabetes—not to mention the long list of other complications linked to insulin resistance—requires both superior antioxidant support and blood sugar control.

So.. simplifying the findings.. A good antioxidant supply is going to be a great help in prevention of diabetes. And an alkaline lifestyle gives abundant, live, natural antioxidants every day.

Poison in our food

I don't like to talk about this.. but having just returned from Thailand I thought I was coming back to a relatively pesticide-free country. Then I saw the videos.

I am very grateful that there is a consciousness in our country about organic food, but we all know we can't get organics all the time. We all have to avail ourselves of the reliability of supply of our major chains. But these videos rocked me.

My readers would also know that Cassie and I have been 'lotus-ing' our storebought fruit and vegetables for the last two years. it's a simple 3 minute operation but it neutralises pesticides, fungicides etc. with that short process. of course we can't say we are healthier us we are using it.. but the problem with accumulating toxins in the body is that it's like a time bomb that explodes only when the accumulation reaches a level that has a greater power over you than your immune system. And as we age, our immune system weakens... so...

Take a look at this 60 Minutes video brought to us by my friends at Food Matters

After that, you may like to check the lotus sanitizer out here.
