Thank you Jon Barron

Jon Barron runs the website 'Baseline of Health' and I've had occasion to read quite a few of his well-thought out articles. His rebuttal of Mercola's now-famous attack on water ionizers is both comprehensive and thoughtful. Here it is.

..And while I'm talking about Mercola, even though he received thousands of anti-emails, he has not bothered recanting or even modifying his stance. I can only assume that he is about to release a product of his own and that he sees water ionizers as some sort of threat. Yet, what is more distressing than his poor, poor article and his massive disinformation effect is the fact that not one of the big operators in the US have had the 'bottle' to legally challenge him.

What's in your bay water? (and your drinking water for that matter!

Click on the image for the story of this new product: drug-infused table salt..

One way to encourage people to save water.

"Geeez! Save some water for the whales!"
I can't even count how many times I heard that while standing in line at the drinking fountain at school. Just in case you don't have bothersome fourth graders handy to remind you not to use sooo much water, designer Yan Lu has a solution.
Rather than publicly shaming you into more mindful water consumption, his "Poor Little Fish basin" casts a line that tugs on your heart strings instead. Leave that faucet flagrantly running and pitiful little Goldie the Goldfish will see the water level in her fishbowl plummet. How could you do that to poor Goldie?
Thankfully, Goldie's watery home isn't actually draining out to wash your hands (um, fish poo?) and wouldn't completely empty either. Good thing too -- otherwise, can you imagine how many ticked-off fourth graders and whales you'd have on your case?

Here's some people doing their best to help

Got a good idea you think the world really needs right now? These guys want to get your idea out into the world.

More on Calcium: Enough? Not enough? Too much?

I just posted an item on the AlkaWay website about calcium and water ionizers in response to Sue's email to me. Sue was worried about the calcium output from her ionizer, so I hope this assists. Love to hear other people's comments

Here's the link.

Doctor Mercola, you've lost it.

Joe Mercola is a likeable sort of a guy. He dispenses some good medical and natural health info to about six million people in his stream of health newsletters.

But this time, Joe, you have really blown it. You brought in an 'expert' who quickly showed he knew basically nothing about water ionization who is in truth a water filter salesman, and told us he was believable. You blew your credibility right there.

Then followed a mishmash of old half truths, unverified statements.. and referenced studies that have nothing to do with alkaline balance; just an attempt to disprove alkalinity's effect on cancer, which really isn't in question in serious alkaline circles. Here it is.

Joe, what was really weird was that you accused the alkaline water ionizer dealers of not producing evidence for their claims, while producing no evidence yourself!

Let's call a spade a spade here. Most of what Dr Joe referred to has nothing whatsoever to do with the health claims made by non-MLM vendors. The whole cancer claim subject has arisen because of the traditionally low level product knowledge exhibited by the MLM fraternity.

As an aside, twenty five years ago a Japanese Quasi-Government report came to conclusions just like yours about the booming Japanese acceptance of water ionizers - and just like yours it based itself on old science and consumer complaints about multilevel health claims.

MLM sells businesses, not health, and in their quest to expand their network, MLM distributors have always been loose with the facts. The comments on Dr Joe's site evidence this superbly; some of the unsubstantiated MLM'er's claims verge on the comic.

But frankly, so does Dr Joe's interview.
He completely ignores the increasing acidification of the American populace.
He completely ignores the accumulated toxic acid waste problem.
He accepts his expert's claim that water ionizers don't filter - although one website visit would have shown him this was wrong.. and he accepts his expert's clumsy attempts at some sort of academic status.

Joe, he's a water filter salesman. He ISN'T an alkaline specialist. You met him at a trade expo! And it's obvious that he's losing market share to alkaline water systems! Give us a break!

This from a man who, in the face of increasing evidence of the deleterious role of salt in reduced health, recommended we filter our water then add salt.

It's not the first time Dr Joe has dropped a blooper. The respected Weston A. Price Foundation (http://www.westonaprice.org/cod-liver-oil/1622-cod-liver-oil-setting-the-record-straight.html) has also given him a big serve about his online condemnation of cod liver oil. After convincing his six million subscribers of the terrible effect of this traditional staple health supplement, he recanted - changed his mind. So maybe there is hope for him yet.

Here's the Foundation's take on him.

"On December 23, 2008, Dr. Joseph Mercola, owner of the popular holistic websitemercola.com, issued a statement, “Important Cod Liver Oil Update,” in which he rescinded his long-standing recommendation to take cod liver oil. The Weston A. Price Foundation received dozens of inquiries about this statement and it is for this reason that we have devoted much of this issue to the subject of cod liver oil.

"Mercola’s official pronouncement is a strange mixture of true statements and illogical sequelae, conflicting reasoning and unexplained omissions. While it is unfortunate that Mercola has joined establishment voices against vitamin A, what concerns us most is not the fact that Dr. Mercola disagrees with us, but that he misrepresents the Weston A price Foundation message on the importance of vitamin A in the modern diet."
Joe, you've done it again. And although I still believe that you are well-meaning, I would expect that many people would be questioning your condemnation of cod liver oil, given that you sell Krill Oil, one of the worst examples of environmentally inappropriate products in the world.

As to a point-by-point rebuttal of your latest effort.. I believe most readers will see for themselves how flawed this latest effort looks. Joe, we all know you make a pile of money from your recommended products. But we also like you. You seem like a nice guy. But hey, nice guys can make mistakes too. Just admit it.

So.. weight loss is bad.. because....

A new study of 100 Americans suggests, probably correctly, that weight loss can be dangerous because it releases the toxins stored in fat. This correlates with our thinking about acids stored in fats as a protective measure by an over acidified body, but the conclusion the study comes to is well.. unusual. It says that because slimming will get rid of the fat, and as the fat reduces the toxins are released, then slimming is bad and keeping the toxins in the body is better. Boy. Reminds me of the people laying on their couches in that wonderful film, Wall-e about the last robot. They were all so fat and had exhausted all of the earth's resources, dumping the used junk in massive and endless heaps, that they had to leave earth in search of another world to consume.

But add this 'attitude to a second report that finds that 30% of Americans don't even KNOW they are fat.. and I think you might agree that we have a problem of perception.

Am I the only one who thinks a bit of detox is preferable to walking around carrying a hundred pounds of dead weight?

Maryanne Williamson's new book

If you've ever read A Course In Miracles, you'll know Maryanne Williamson. She wrote THE book on the Course. Now she's back with a similarly themed book  called 'A Course In weight Loss'.

The theme is very 'AA' in that it's all about recognising that you have a problem larger than you, then following a 'course' to overcome it. As my readers know, it's my own belief that diet is probably our biggest addiction, so for those of you who never manage that diet plan, this may be something worthwhile.

Here's a link for Aussie readers to score a deal on it. .

Alkaline water? Snake Oil! Feed it to your dog!

John Hunt spent ages suffering from shingles.. so painful that he lay on the floor screaming. But when told about alkaline water by a friend, he told him it was snake oil. The story continues...

Sandra's amazing results

Sandra is one of the participants in our recent study of people with arthritis, gout and rheumatism. Her story is significant because as a nutritionalist, she is already aware of the need to alkalize. In fact she's been adhering to an 80/20 diet for ages.. but her arthritis didn't get better.

Hey Mister Grumpy! You're headed for a stroke.

A new report tells us that unpleasant people are much more likely to have a stroke. I'm not surprised.

Check it out here. Say please.. be nice.

From Cancer to Wellness

Kris Matheson is an AlkaWay water drinker. She's also one dynamic lady who conquered cancer on her own using natural methods.

I've just finished her book, From Cancer To Wellness, and I'm impressed.

It's not a definitive book.
It's more a chance for a cancer sufferer to access 25 years' worth of knowledge of natural alternatives in one place, in an organised readable form. This is, in my view, something that few people realise its worth. The problem I see over and over and over with cancer sufferers is their inability to find good info.

David Suzuki called the Internet 'the Information Super-Hypeway' for good reason. It is the world's largest repository of bumpf. Cassie is an excellent health researcher and she agrees. You waste so much time trying to
(a) find good info and
(b) work out if it isn't just another sales pitch.

So reading Kris' book I realised that she is offering cancerians (let's not call them victims) a chance to cut to the chase, to access modalities and natural remedies that Kris has spent the time and effort proving.

This may not make sense to anyone who hasn't found themselves lost in cyberspace, and unfortunately, unless you do lose yourself, you'll have to take my word for it when I say this book is going to save you days, months, even lifetimes.

Just one thing: when Kris wrote this book she had not yet discovered our water. She now has a water ionizer of her own, and that, I guess, is why it isn't mentioned in the book. She does mention alkaline bottled water, but in my experience it's not just a matter of adding alkaline minerals to  water; it's getting that amazing negative charge, converting mineral water to true 'enhanced water' a powerful antioxidant. I have studies on the effect of ionized alkaline water on cancer cells on file, and over my ten years of talking to people in this 'situation', I've come to believe that water that alkalizes AND kills free radicals AND superhydrates is a proverbial gift from God.

We have a few copies from Kris at AlkaWay: if you'd like to get one go here.

AlkaPod: Small package. Big Effect.

ALKAPOD PORTABLE  IONIZER

Kaz, our inhouse alkaline specialist received this email today.

"Hi Karen,
I purchased an Alkapod in March this year.........terrific buy!!!! My gouts gone and the pains with it.
Now I'm trying to reduce my blood pressure and it's working, I take one tablet every second day now and my blood pressure is good. I'm also trying to control my diabetes with Alkaline water and I know that in time I will.
John Powell"

And on the same day, Leon, one of our alkaline specialist team received this:

"I have found since using the Alkapod my Arthritis has improved greatly."
~Shirley Wilson

Shirley has been using the AlkaPod for about six months. No wonder we've sold thousands of 'em.

Ian: Made my day! Again.
Of course, due to the law, I have to point out that these are individual responses and cannot be interpreted or inferred to give the same result.

A Sense of Proportion is Essential

I receive news from all around the world about water, and naturally there are some reports that are bad news.. buta  sense of proportion is definitely needed. Take this report about residents upset about discoloured drinking water.

"When Jo Turpin noticed the brown water in the toilets, she assumed it was related to the hot water heater that she recently replaced. Learning that it is actually a regional issue does not suprise the longtime resident, who has lived in her Parkview Drive home for nearly 22 years.
Her family has been purifying the water for nearly a decade, using a triple-filtration system because, she says, "My water always has a bad taste; it always tastes like chlorine." She says the chlorine is so potent that she can occasionally smell it while showering.
Prior to this week's brown water, Turpin had complained to the NJAWC several times regarding the chlorine smell. "I've been told it's safe, but I don't drink the tap water," she says, adding that her parents, who live in Short Hills and receive water from the same supply, do not have the issue.
One of Turpin's neighbors, who declined to give her name, says her mother-in-law noticed the water's strange color on Tuesday, but she didn't think much of it until later filling the bathtub to give her two-year-old son a bath.
"I had noticed it in the toilets, but didn't give it much thought," she says of the tinged water. "But then when you try to take a bath, it is not clear. I said 'I'm not putting him in this.'"
The water was not a dark brown; the color resembled that of toilet water that had been urinated in, she adds
Nearly a week later, the water is still brown."

The sense of proportion I mentioned kicked in when I saw this next report flash up.
God, how lucky we are!

Don't want to get you too excited, but...

Until the end of this month you can score a free lotus Home food sanitizer with any of our electronic water ionizers you buy... AND get it sent to you anywhere in Australia for ten dollars.

I have to say I LOVE my lotus. In fact it's working right now as I speak, getting rid of the pesticides on the vegetables Cassie just bought at the supermarket. Our winter lunch of La Minestra is going to be all that more delicious for knowing it isn't stacking up the poison in us.

Cassie has also taken to leaving our tomatoes out of the fridge, on display, because she has found that they keep so much better after a lotus session.

So if you've been thinking about making the leap to the alkaline toxin-free lifestyle.. here's your chance.. while stocks last.

Welcome to my World - but don't bring your mobile

I have has tinnitus for many, many years.
I live with it - as you do. But it appears I'm going to have lots of friends in the Tinnitus club.

While everyone has been worried about the possibility that mobile (cell) phones cause cancer, few realise that the devices are a major cause of tinnitus, the distressing hearing problem. Even using a mobile phone for 10 minutes increases the risk by 71 per cent, researchers have discovered, although the risk doubles for those who have used a mobile phone for more than four years.

The overall risk for any use is 37 per cent compared with someone who does not use a mobile phone.

Researchers made the discovery when they compared the records of 100 tinnitus sufferers with a similar number of healthy controls. Most tinnitus sufferers said their problem was on their left side, where they held their mobile phone, and 29 per cent said they also suffered from vertigo.

Wow. This made my day.

As you know by now, we are not allowed to make therapeutic claims about our wonderful water. So when I saw this come in to Karen, our Alkaline Specialist, it was a case of wondering what to do. Well, the story solved the problem.

These lovely people aren't making claims. They have no idea why the results are happening! here's their story.

"...Karen , We have both benefited and have passed the lessons on to others, one of whom is seriously considering purchasing a machine , we joined there to learn after we had been given a machine by a concerned friend and though I considered it snake oil hooked it up and gave it a shot.

We have both gained far better health over the past 4 months and people are noticing , in fact it is rather hard not to get all evangelical about alkaline water so if someone asks questions we refer them to your site or in the case of two old friends with limited resources we supply them with water.

I have just today spent a day with a friend who owns a couple of pharmacies and he is most interested after seeing how my wife and I have both benefited. Some things are very hard to explain however and I am unsure why they have happened My blood pressure is down to normal for the first time in years also my diabetes readings of a morning are down from 10-11 to 6-7.

Another thing that is confusing is on the advise of a friend from Hong Kong I have been rinsing my arms with the acid water and all my skin cancers have shrivelled dried and peeled off is this normal or just co incidence ? I am dying to get over to Alkaway and talk to the people there and learn more

Ian: You know, I really am a lazy so-and-so. My old surfing days have left me with dozens of small skin cancers and i don't bother to use the acid water here at home!

Swimming daily? Be aware. Ask your pool man.

A study conducted by University of Illinois researchers found that swimming pool disinfectants have the potential to cause genetic damage to mammalian cells, posing a risk to frequent swimmers, Biotechdaily.com reported.

The researchers used a mammalian cell genotoxicity-analysis technique to compare samples of swimming pool water to tap water, the article stated.
They found that disinfectants in pool water interact with disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors that include natural organic substances in addition to inputs from bathers through urine, sweat, hair, skin and consumer products including cosmetics and sunscreens.

All of the disinfected pool water samples were found to induce more genomic DNA damage than the source tap water, according to the story.

“Care should be taken in selecting disinfectants to treat recreational pool water,” said senior author Dr. Michael Plewa, professor of genetics at the University of Illinois. “The data suggest that brominating agents should be avoided as disinfectants of recreational pool water. The best method to treat pool waters is a combination of UV treatment with chlorine as compared to chlorination alone.”

Ian: And what else do the majority of us expose daily to chlorine, chloramines and pharmaceuticals? Our intestine.Hmm..

Depressed Shrimp have a Problem...

A new study by Alex Ford and Yasmin Guler, marine biologists at the University of Portsmouth in the UK
found that shrimp exposed to the antidepressant fluoxetine (Prozac) were five times more likely to swim towards light, which is normally associated with predators such as birds and fishermen.

The change in behavior puts shrimp in danger and could have wider implications for the entire ocean ecosystem, the article stated.

“Crustaceans are crucial to the food chain and if shrimps’ natural behavior is being changed because of antidepressant levels in the sea this could seriously upset the natural balance of the ecosystem,” said Ford. “Much of what humans consume you can detect in the water in some concentration. We’re a nation of coffee drinkers and there is a huge amount of caffeine found in waste water, for example. It’s no surprise that what we get from the pharmacy will also be contaminating the country’s waterways.”

Here's the study

When you look at the next article, you'll begin to see a common theme. Mixing modern personal care or pharmaceuticals with our drinking water, whether we are a prawn or a human, is rapidly being revealed as serious health risk.
