Fruit juice drinks; even nastier than Coke!
I'm right in the middle of writing our New Acid and Alkaline Diet Book, and just happened to be writing about fruit and fruit juices when I came across this amazing InfoGraphic. Scroll down and love
Pharmaceuticals in our water; Repeat Offender
We've heard all about traces of drugs in our drinking water.
Unfortunately, that may seem pretty minor in comparison if you happen to live near a drug production plant that's located on a waterway. According to a Pharmalot report, Merck violated the Clean Water Act with three chemical discharges into the water supplies of Pennsylvania, in the US. One of these discharges was so extreme that the entire city of Philadelphia had to shut down drinking water temporarily.
Nice.
For that little misstep, Merck paid a fine of more than $20 million in 2007.
So... lesson learned?

What If... When you went to the Doc.
Mark Sisson over at Mark's Daily Apple took my interest with this:
"What I’d really like to see is a little high-def moving graphical representation of your arterial health. Like, instead of getting a single snapshot of the state of your blood lipids, you’d go into the doctor’s office and strap on a non-invasive device (which, if required for its operation, applies the perfect dose of ionizing radiation to provoke a hormetic response, rather than a pathogenic one) that monitors your blood lipid activity. You’d wear it for maybe a week, during which time it would monitor your blood,

Not Happy Today
 Not happy. Sitting on my bum for the last week and most likely 3 months to go. My leg is broken right at the base of the tibia and I won't know if it needs a screw in it for another week when I go to see the bone specialists. Drinking gallons of alkaline water and Cassie is making me Bone-Knit (comfrey) smoothies 3 times a day so there's really nothing more to do except sit here and bash out blog articles.

Oxygen, Energy and Age
I've been doing quite a bit of research lately into the relationship of the pH of our blood and its ability to hold oxygen. Few people really think about where oxygen we breathe in goes after the lungs. In fact it undergoes a quite miraculous transfer to the blood, which then sends it all overt the body to supply energy to every cell. But if our blood is too acidic, we have a problem. Oxygen carrying capacity falls sharply when the ideal alkaline pH falls towards acid.
That's a major, major reason we as a generation (talking to you, Boomers and beyond!) are always tired. We are inflamed,

Does an alkaline diet REALLY support bone growth?
It's a resounding YES! ResearcherDr Bess Dawson-Hughes of Tufts University found that diets high in cereal grains and proteins actually produce an excess of acid in the body, and may weaken bones and increase calcium excretion.
The study found that increasing the alkali content of the diet, the opposite effect and strengthens bone health.
‘Heredity, diet, and other lifestyle factors contribute to the problem of bone loss and fractures,’ said lead author Dr Bess Dawson-Hughes of Tufts University. ‘When it comes to dietary concerns regarding bone health, calcium and vitamin D have

Ohio Town Citizens go on unplanned Acid trip
BELLAIRE, Ohio – Water service for thousands of residents returned to normal Tuesday, a day after the system was flushed to remove hydrochloric acid accidentally added to the village's supply.
Forty pounds of the acid were added to Bellaire's water Sunday after a supplier shipped the wrong chemical and the filtration system crew mistook the containers for fluoride. The error was discovered Monday morning when workers noticed fluoride levels were lower than normal.
"Unfortunately, the drums are all the same size and the same color," water department superintendent Kirk Baker

Calcium, Milk, Alkalizing.. and colorectal cancer
The net allows me quite a different impression of information.
Information is no longer the preserve of the powerful, drip fed to the masses. It is now the opposite. It's something that is now so available that we get it within minutes of its release and in my case, I've been able to watch it 'mutate' as it spreads across the web. Such is the case of this article on the role of calcium in colorectal cancer. The article originally came from the Archives of Internal medicine but I found it on the site of a vitamin company, NutraIngredients.com in Europe.
However within 24 hours the milk

Calcium and Cancer: a pretty convincing study.
Right on the heels of Dr Simoncini's video about bicarbonate of soda and cancer, we have this report about calcium and cancer. No brownie points for spotting the link: both substances alkaline of course.
This is no small study. It is based on a study of 492,000people. It was just released a few days ago, and it comes from the Archives of Internal Medicine. It suggests that the more calcium you have, especially as you age, the less likely you are to develop some forms of cancer.
The seven year study of almost half a million people showed that around 10% - 50,000 - contracted cancer,

Oxidation at work
This video shows oxidation at work on a humble apple, yet it's the same oxidation that imperceptibly yet inexorably ages you me and the family dog.
Oxidation is caused by acids.
When we die our acids take over and we rot.
Acids and ageing are, in this sense, synonomous.
While we are on the subject, let's discuss apples.. and carrots, and mangoes and all things that make for wonderful juices.
An off-the-shelf high speed juicer is an excellent oxidiser. The heat it generates as it mecerates the fruit or vegetable kills the enzymes that keep a glass of juice alive, oxidation begins

What the Italians thought of alkaline water.
At Frosinone, Lazio, close to Rome, a famous mineral water is still highly thought of and sought after. However how long have Italians loved their alkaline spring water?
Well, it seems Michelangelo came to Frosinone, saying of his kidney stone that it was 'the only kind of stone I could not love'. and subsequently claiming that the water healed his kidney

Business Ethics Today
I just spent 3 hours discussing the the question of business ethics with a psychologist friend of mine. The freeform notes below are a ‘yet to be organised’ collection of thoughts I have had since that discussion.
Firstly, I suggest that we could ask ourselves why we are in business. Is it because we want money? Why do we want money? What is money alleviating or fulfilling in us? This may seem obvious but it may vary greatly depending on the dominant belief system or systems we live life by. Some of us may see a business as a living, a way to beat the system, or a way to live the

Cocaine in Red Bull !!!??? No worries, it's 'decocainized'.
This news report explains a lot. Yes, yes, I know, I was a CocaCola addict at High school, but the addiction to Red Bull is - from my observations - something else.
Long the favourite of all night computer gamers and programmers, now we hear that the German government has found cocaine in Red Bull.
" Red Bull Cola has been banned in at least six German states after the newest offering from the world’s leading energy drink maker was found to contain cocaine.
The controversy blew up after the food safety agency in North Rhine-Westphalia (LIGA) state found 0.4 micrograms per litre

Paralytic over Softdrinks!
'Ostrich farmer requires emergency care for lung paralysis after consuming too much cola. Ostriches OK.'
Excessive cola consumption can lead to anything from mild weakness to profound muscle paralysis. It can cause your blood potassium to drop dangerously low.
Dr. Clifford Packer says that, “We have every reason to think that it is not rare. With aggressive mass marketing, super-sizing of soft drinks, and the effects of caffeine tolerance and dependence, there is very little doubt that tens of millions of people in industrialized countries drink at least 2-3 liters of cola per

Gout: It looks as painful as it is!
The usual diagnosis method for gout is invasive; doctors are required to draw fluid from the gout area and check for the presence of uric acid crystals.
Now computer assisted tomography can actually 'see' the crystals, as in this pic. Unfortunately so far, unless you live in Canada, the new technique is not much good to you.
Also, one wonders the real use of such a wonderful technique when gout is pretty darn self-evident, and easily diagnosable. So is the therapy; alkalize!

Gratitude is in Order
We often hear of polluted water in many parts of the world. indeed, the previous post was pics of such water sources. But when you get to know a little about water and see an actual news item with pH quoted, you (after picking yourself off the floor) can indulge in a touch of gratitude for where you live.

Vinegar for Weight Loss?
Ordinary vinegar – acetic acid – may prevent the build up of fat, and therefore weight gain, according to results of a study with mice from Japan.
Animals fed a high-fat diet and supplemented with acetic acid developed about 10 per cent less body fat than mice just eating the diet, according to findings published in theJournal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
If the results can be repeated in further studies, particularly in human studies, it could see vinegar establish itself in the burgeoning weight management category.

Good News For Drinkers
As you know, I am a fan of the Mediterranean diet - ever since I spent time in Crete as a 20-something adventurer. It seems to be a constant in a changing sea of diets, but what was never clear was what in the Mediterranean diet was the driving force for health and longevity. The fish perhaps, with its wonderful omega 3's? Or was it the greens, with the alkalizing effect, antioxidants and phytonutrients?
Nope. it's the booze.
Here's the report from the British medical journal, but here's the summary.

Is Chlorine Cancerous? And Should You Shower In It?
We've been watching the debate about fluoride so long now that we've forgotten the chlorine debate.
Chlorine is a carcinogen, but we don't know at what level of addition to a water supply it becomes carcinogenic. This very recent study summary puts it well:
"The author concludes that the uncertainties surrounding possible health risks from chlorination DBPs appear not to be appreciated by many of those involved in drinking water regulation, production or research."
Doesn't really inspire confidence, does it?
We have seen several instances in recent years where drought conditions

Building Bone Vitality: The Truth at last
I talked about this book in a previous post. Now I have it I am seriously excited. Just look at the chapter headings and you'll see why.
1. Countries that consume the most milk, dairy foods and calcium supplements suffer the most fractures.
2. Why some osteoporosis studies should be taken more seriously than others.
3. Milk, dairy foods and calcium supplements by themselves or in any combination do not prevent fractures.
4. Calcium intake during childhood does not prevent fractures at any stage of life.
5. Vitamin D with or without a calcium supplement prevents few if any

New Scientific Study on Cancer Cells and Alkaline Ionised Water
Here's the link to the abstract of the first of these reports: (more later) It's all about a test carried out by a team of scientists on cancer cells.
Cancer cells, you see, grow differently to normal cells, in what the team at Kyushu Uni termed a 'two-stage cell transformation", or classic cancer runaway mutational growth.
The test concluded: ERW (Elecrolysed Reduced Water or ionised alkaline water) supplemented with Pt nps (platinum) is a potential new antioxidant against carcinogenesis. The 'Pt nps' mentioned in the abstract is platinum, which combines with the water in a water

And another report on Liver Protection against oxidation.
Oh, how glad I am not to be a mouse!
Scientists poisoned mice with carbon tetrachloride to simulate the effects of excess acidity as liver damage (at least I think that's right!).
Results?
"Therefore, the results of this study show that ERW* can be proposed to protect the liver against CCl(4)-induced oxidative damage in mice, and the hepatoprotective effect might be correlated with its antioxidant and free radical scavenging effect."
Here's the link to the study abstract.

Alkaline Water: Even the Beer makers are doing it!
I well remember a comment by Dr Gerry Brady about beer drinkers. "Look at them, Ian." he said, pointing towards the inhabitants of a local bar. "What d'you think they are doing? They are acidifying! beer is loaded with acid!" (Gerry is the guy who directed me to benefits ofItalian wines grown in alkaline soil)
Now i find that beer makers are attempting to alter the potential hangover effects of their brews. On this beer appreciation site I read:
"Ingredients: Well-modified pale malt, with generous quantities of roasted malts and/or grain. May have a complex grain bill using virtually

Is 'Organic' really a better juice?
A recent study by Washington State University assessed the levels of antioxidants in citrus fruits and juices.
Organic lemonade had ten timesthe total eriocitrin (a form of antioxidant) compared to its conventional counterpart. Organic apple juice had three times as much hesperidin and twice as much hesperetin (again both forms of antioxidants) compared to non organic apple juice.
You might also be interested, given the higher price we pay for organic fruit and vegetables, that we tested the two top live enzyme juicers on the market and found from our tests that an organic carrot

Alkalis and our Skin: or..how to give away your own power of decision.
I think I am learning something about discrimination. My problem has been trusting people because of the letters after their name, rather than taking the time to think things out myself.
I don't feel bad about it. I actually think it's a part of life today. So much to do, so little time translates into giving your power of discrimination away if an 'expert' says something in language you can quickly understand.
So when I originally heard Dr Robert O Young say that alkaline was good for the skin, I accepted it. luckily, a little bird kept a-twittering about it and when this

"Miracle Water"
Take a look at this video. It'll blow you away.
Then think about this: This technology is SOOO close to the very same water coming from your water ioniser and regarded as 'waste' or 'byproduct' water. Yes, they have made it into a form that can be applied to wounds without drying out. But anyone who has witnessed that extraordinary video from Japan of an old man being treated with acid watwer from a water ioniser would have to agree that it looks and acts very similarly to this 'biotechnology
