Giardia; A very tricky parasite in drinking water

Dr Hugo D. Luján of Catholic University of Córdoba in Argentina and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, has found that the Giardia lamblia parasite changes its shape when meeting the human immune system. The parasite is known to cause about 200 million cases of diarrhea each year, and the research into its function is helping to develop a genetically modified strain that can serve as a possible vaccine for the disease.
The Giardia genome contains nearly 200 genes that code for surface antigens. Despite the large number of genes, each parasite displays only a single

Or.. What Makes a Good MLM Distributor?

Readers who have been with me over the years would be aware that I am not overly enamoured by the MLM model of marketing. A couple of years ago I was offered the national distribution of IonWays by David Forsyth, an old friend and now MD of IonWays. It was attractive.. I have to admit.. but no matter how Cassie and I turned the idea over in our minds, we couldn't accept the ethics of MLM and therefore walked away from it.

Of course we questioned David at the time about the fact that almost all MLM sign-ups fail. That means the premise they used to

Young Americans and Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis, it seems is not the preserve of the aged.

This study of US teenagers found frightening evidence of osteo in 14 year old US schoolgirls, directly related to their habit of guzzling 'sodas'. What was even more revealing was that girls who participated in sport had even worse osteo.. presumable because they drank more soda in the form of Gatorade

You Asked For It. SOB on Video

SOB? Silly old Bugger. I'm lying on the couch with a broken leg. I've been here since December 26 when Neil, our son and website manager, invited me to 'have a go' on his new electric skateboard. Now.. should a 65 year old take up the offer, and if he does, why does he? Ego? Pride? idiocy? All of the above. Here's the video.

However, there is a 'positive side'. It may not seem positive but I'm all about seeing the positive.

First, the negative. It hurt, it's a nuisance, I'm confined to the couch on the best days of the year.. and in a bone density test I asked for I found that I

Cryptosporidium Found

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="326" caption="CRYPTOSPORIDIUM"][/caption]

PORTLAND, Ore. — A test last week of the drinking water reservoir in Portland, Ore. found that the parasite, cryptosporidium, found over a year ago was still prevalent in the water, according to KATU News.

This happened just before the state was scheduled to decide whether to give a waiver on building a $90 million water treatment plant, stated the article.

“It would just be irrational for anyone to think in an area as large as the Bull Run there aren't critters that poop in the woods and after a

Steve moved from Byron Bay a couple of years ago when the Beach Hotel, owned by his friends Strop and Delvene Delaney was sold. His new Fins is a wonderful spot, part indoor, part outdoor, and the food (predominantly seafood) was.. well, it was beyond superlatives. Perhaps it was the wine.. but Cassie, Morthern and I had (we all agreed) the most

A Scientific Study of the Effects of Alkaline Ionized Water we could do without.

As a part of my ongoing research into the many health benefits of alkaline ionized water I get to see many scientific reports. But here's one that frankly we could all do without. To demonstrate the efficacy of alkaline ionized water these scientists gave hairless lab rats radiation burns... then measured how effective healing was with AI water and tap water. Not surprisingly, the AI water was much better than the tap water.. but.. what were they

Dr Greg Emerson is a very interesting guy. A strong advocate for alkalizing, he has helped quite a few people I've sent his way. Here's his website, and here is his 12 questions for 2012.

Am I living my life with integrity? That means I’m doing the right thing as well as being honest. There is no other way to spiritual enlightenment.
Have I got the fluoride, chlorine, copper and plastic out of the water I drink and bathe in?
Am I eating organic, local, wild and minimally processed foods, spices and herbs that I grow myself or buy from local farmers markets?
Am I doing some sort of

Eggs anyone?

Chinese scientists have developed a new process to aid people who fear real eggs (for no good reason).

They treated egg yolks with ultrasound for fifteen minutes and then added an enzyme and waited ten hours at 98 degrees Fahrenheit. The amount of cholesterol decreased by over ninety percent. In other words the eggs got less nutritious. The effect on the taste isn’t mentioned.

Outrageous Facts about Bottled Water

Just back from LA, I'm still reeling from the effect of consumer lifestyle in The US. I'm not saying that we aren't a consumer society here in Australia, but most Australians who've visited the US say the same; it's like looking into the future. And here is what Los Angeles people are confronted with at the local breakfast bar!
I also spent almost an hour in a huge Whole Foods store. The sheer volume of bottled water reminded me of this page about bottled water.

Super Oxide Dismutase: The Anti Aging Factor We Can Change

This little video is very intereresting. It comes from a pro-vegetarian website, and makes the conclusion that superoxide dismutase, the oxidant killer, is much more powerful in vegetarians. Only problem is, as usual.. what is a vegetarian these days? If the SOD support comes from green foods like broccoli and spinach. I'm happy because I eat them daily.. along with meat and fats. But most vegetarians I know (having been one for 12 years) are of the 'lazy' variety, bulking up on carbs, especially bread, and really loading up on sugars in the form of fructose and fructan- heavy

Pharmaceuticals in our water; Repeat Offender

We've heard all about traces of drugs in our drinking water.

Unfortunately, that may seem pretty minor in comparison if you happen to live near a drug production plant that's located on a waterway. According to a Pharmalot report, Merck violated the Clean Water Act with three chemical discharges into the water supplies of Pennsylvania, in the US. One of these discharges was so extreme that the entire city of Philadelphia had to shut down drinking water temporarily.

Nice.

For that little misstep, Merck paid a fine of more than $20 million in 2007.

So... lesson learned?

What If... When you went to the Doc.

Mark Sisson over at Mark's Daily Apple took my interest with this:

"What I’d really like to see is a little high-def moving graphical representation of your arterial health. Like, instead of getting a single snapshot of the state of your blood lipids, you’d go into the doctor’s office and strap on a non-invasive device (which, if required for its operation, applies the perfect dose of ionizing radiation to provoke a hormetic response, rather than a pathogenic one) that monitors your blood lipid activity. You’d wear it for maybe a week, during which time it would monitor your blood,
